Biochemistry Department

Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6)


Applications are invited for the above posts within the Biochemistry department. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our hard working and friendly team.


We provide a high quality UKAS Accredited Biochemistry service supporting the Acute Trust and Primary care. Core hours are 9:00 am – 5:30 pm but we also operate 24/7/365 shift rotation in which you will be required to participate.


The department currently processes approximately 400,000 requests per year and 4.4million tests per year. To meet this demand the laboratory is well-equipped with a varying degree of tracked and standalone automation. The main analytical equipment is provided by Siemens and consists of 2 x Advia XPT Chemistry Systems and 2 x Advia XPT Centaur Systems connected to Inpeco Aptio automation. The department is approved for training by the IBMS, and all staff are encouraged to participate in CPD.


Applicants should have an accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent and have a minimum of 2 years’ experience post HCPC registration in a Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. Applicants will have completed, be in the process of completing or be willing to undertake the specialist Portfolio as a condition of employment.

Please note pay progression is subject to the NHS Agenda for Change Pay Progression provisions applicable from 1st April 2019.

All posts are subject to NHS Employment Check Standards including a DBS check, if applicable. Depending on the classification of the post, in-line with DBS guidelines, a Standard or Enhanced disclosure will be required which may include a check of the ‘Vulnerable Adults List’, the ‘Children’s List’ and/or the Independent Safeguarding Authorities (ISA’s) barred lists.

A charge of £39 (Standard) or £60 (Enhanced) will be made by the successful candidate which will be deducted from the first 3 months’ salary. In addition to this, you will also be required to re-pay any future costs that may arise in relation to DBS fees.

NB. Current employees of Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who have had a satisfactory DBS check, carried out by this Trust during the last 3 years, will not be required to undertake a new one. Where staff have not had a check (classification appropriate to the post offered) within the last 3 years, they will be required to undertake and pay for this, as per the arrangements above.
