Applications are invited for whole time Consultants in Acute Medicine with support to develop/ maintain a specialist interest. These new appointments will join the team of established medical consultants working in GGH.
The successful candidates will be expected to have specialty training and relevant experience in General Medicine/Acute Medicine and should be on the GMC specialist register or be eligible for inclusion on the register within six months of the interview date and have MRCP or equivalent.
You would work in both the CDU/Emergency Unit and in an area of specialist interest if appropriate. You will be responsible for the acute assessment and management of patients presenting to GGH with medical problems and will lead a team of junior doctors, nurses and community teams in this area. You will be supported to develop “hot clinics” and pathways.
Supervision and training of junior staff will be part of the role as well as mentoring medical students from both Swansea and Cardiff Medical Schools. Many of the current physicians in Hywel Dda have honorary roles within the post-graduate medical school at Swansea University. Opportunities for a successful candidate to develop specific research interests will be supported.
Although these are full time positions, individuals wishing to work on a less-than-full time-basis will be considered. Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues and the management team.

Glangwili General Hospital is within an area popular with both national and international tourists with easy access to beautiful beaches, countryside and mountains. There is a wide range of affordable housing and the area boasts excellent schools. There are good road and rail links to Pembrokeshire in the west and Cardiff and England to the east.

The medicine department is currently funded for 10 full-time Consultant who currently provide acute medical cover on 1:10 rota for all adult age groups. The department operates on a ward-based system with speciality-based ward care being the aim. On average 20-30 medical patients are admitted per 24 hour period. The new posts will provide cover for the “front door” of the hospital with expertise being concentrated in the CDU and A+E. The current rota is under review and the aim is to ensure 8am-8pm consultant led care 7 days a week.
