Higher Healthcare Technical Officer

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking.

The Microbiology Services Laboratory provides a centralised and diverse microbiology, virology, and serology service that is essential to the operation of NHSBT. This vacancy is based in the National Transfusion Microbiology Reference Laboratory (NTMRL) which is a specialist laboratory responsible for the confirmation of microbiological screen reactivity in samples from blood, tissue and stem cell donors. NTMRL also performs some specialist non-blood donor screening (tissue, stem cell and organ donors), the lot release testing of microbiological assays, and provides expert advice and guidance.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with experience in handling blood samples. Candidates should be comfortable with using a pipette, and have experience with in-putting information onto a computer system such as a database or a LIMS.

In return you’ll benefit from an excellent pension, and the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, using modern equipment and practices, where you can develop your specialist skills and scientific education.

The normal working hours are 37.5 hours a week, Monday – Friday.
