Inpatient facilities are provided from Sunderland Royal Hospital (SRH), South Tyneside District Hospital (STDH), St Benedict’s Hospice and from the specialist Sunderland Eye Infirmary. This gives a total of around 1200 acute beds, as well as a state-of-the-art critical care facilities.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for registered nurses to join a 24 month rotational programme within the Division of Urgent and Emergency Care. This involves placements across the Trusts hospital sites,lasting 6 months, across 4 specialities, either the Emergency Department, Emergency Assessment Unit,
Same Day Emergency Care, Ward B20 or across site placements.

On each new rotation you will be given a 2-week supernumerary period and be allocated a mentor. At the end of the programme you will have the opportunity to apply for a permanent position in your chosen specialist area. If a vacancy isn’t available
in your area of preference you will be offered an alternative preference.


Emergency Care is a fast paced environment, therefore we are looking for nurses who are enthusiastic and motivated, who can demonstrate a caring and compassionate attitude, who have a desire to provide high quality, effective and efficient patient care. There are various specialist nurse roles which offer staff succession planning and opportunities for development.

The successful candidate must work well in a team and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients and relatives/carers. You will be dynamic, able to respond to change and demonstrate active assistance and support when working as part of a team.


As a new registrant, or a registrant moving into the NHS for the first time, you will be supported through a six month multi-professional Preceptorship programme, by our Preceptorship Lead and in clinical practice by an allocated and experienced clinical practitioner (a preceptor). We will provide guidance, support and feedback throughout your transition period, while you develop the necessary knowledge and skills in
becoming a confident and competent practitioner.

DBS CHARGES

As from 1st November 2020, it is a requirement of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month's pay.
