The Role:        

We have an urgent long term placement opportunity for Speech and Language Therapist - Band 6 available at Knowsley Building, Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust

Job Summary:

  • The post holder will work flexibly across a range of services providing input into both district and specialist mental health services using evidence based and person-centred principles, to assess, plan, implement and evaluate treatment
  • The post holder will provide SLT assessment, advice and intervention for those whose communication impairments are as a primary result of organic or functional diagnosis, and where difficulties are having a direct impact upon current health and well-being and functional ability. They will provide dysphagia assessment, advice, and intervention to stabilise and/or reduce associated clinical risks on oral intake, make recommendations regarding environment, positioning, dysphagia techniques and/or texture modification of diet and fluids
  • The post holder will be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of their professional and clinical work, working to agreed local, national, and professional standards 

Skills:

To apply for this post, you will:

  • RCSLT accredited degree or equivalent certificate to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT)
  • HCPC Registration
  • Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.
  • Post basic training in Dysphagia
  • Independent Dysphagia experience
  • Relevant post qualification experience working with adults with acquired neurological and mental health conditions
  • Have knowledge of assessment and management of communication impairments associated with dementia and other mental health conditions 

Responsibilities:

The post holder will:

  • To effectively examine and assess patients’ communication and/or swallowing, identify their problems and needs, and ensure that patients' medical, cognitive, psychological, social, environmental, and cultural factors are considered including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi-pathologies
  • To utilize examination and assessment findings to competently plan and carry out specialist programmes of treatment from a range of therapeutic options appropriate to each patient, using evidence-based practice
  • To take responsibility for devising specialist programmes of care for other professionals to carry out and for ensuring they are carried out appropriately
  • To provide specialist advice to others regarding the management and care of patients with communication and/or swallowing impairment
  • To monitor and review care plans against outcomes and adjust care plans to facilitate achievement of goals
  • To raise awareness of communication and swallowing impairments via health promotion initiatives, educational initiatives, and health fairs
  • To counsel and advise patients and/or carers as required to ensure that they are fully aware of the aims and objectives of SLT intervention
  • To produce, disseminate and update reports/guidelines regarding individual care plans to carers and other professionals
