Are you passionate about the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people?

Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) are based within schools, ensuring children and young people receive faster access to earlier mental health support and we are excited to be recruiting sixteen Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs) (4 per team). There will be two teams in Chorley & South Ribble, one team in Preston and one team in West Lancashire.

As a Trainee EMHP you will work under supervision as part of a dynamic mental health team in a creative environment. You will need to be adaptable and have a passion for working with children and young people in education settings. During the training year, post-holders will, under supervision, develop knowledge and practice skills to employ a range of evidence-based interventions for common mental health problems via direct individual and group support for children, young people and their parents or carers, as well as whole school approaches, in line with the university expectations.

Main duties of the job

Trainee EMHPs will:

  • Work closely alongside a team of mental health and education professionals delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions, under supervision.
  • Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to work directly with children, young people and families.
  • Develop and practice evidence-based skills under supervision to carry out holistic and child-centered mental health assessments, including risk assessments.

Trainee EMHPs are required to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to work at degree level or have an equivalent level of relevant experience, with a proven record of previous learning or formal study in child development, wellbeing or mental health

Trainee EMHPs will have experience of:

  • working with children and young people, their families and others.
  • working and liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders
  • working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or mental health difficulties

EMHP posts are training positions subject to 3-year fixed term contracts. In the first 12 months of employment EMHPs will be on a training contract at Band 4. Subject to successful completion of training EMHPs will be employed for a further 24 months (with potential for longer) at Band 5.

Training will involve attending teaching at Edge Hill University (EHU), Ormskirk, Lancashire, either virtually or in person and placement and study days. There will be some non-teaching weeks spread throughout the year.

Please note that the Mental Health Support Teams contract has not yet been awarded to a Provider and the duties undertaken will be on behalf of the Clinical Commissioning Groups identified. The Provider will be announced late November 2021, therefore we are unable to list the employing organisation for this role. The job description, person specification and pay banding will not be affected.
