Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust was rated good by the Care Quality Commission in its recent inspection report published in January 2020.

The Trust is committed to driving excellence in care for patients and communities, through its five-year strategy ‘Working Together’. In support of its strategy, in July 2020, the Trust became a university hospital, and will work to drive benefits for patients, colleagues and the local community by embedding research, education and training across the organisation.

The Trust’s main hub is the Queen Alexandra Hospital, which started life more than a century ago as a military hospital. Today it is one of the largest, modern hospitals on the south coast, with 1,200 beds housed in light, bright, infection resistant, en-suite wards. With a turnover of close to £600m, the Trust provides comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675,000 people across South East Hampshire. Some tertiary services are provided to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7,300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

We welcome and encourage applications from individuals from diverse backgrounds. We recognise the value that a diverse workforce has in initiating fresh ideas and the contribution to delivering excellence for our patients, their families and carers.

Outstanding opportunity for an ambitious trainee Hepatologist or gastroenterologist to gain experience of delivering clinical research under the supervision of Dr Richard Aspinall.

The Portsmouth Liver Centre is one of the largest hepatology services in Southern England and includes 4 consultant hepatologists, 5 hepatology nurse specialists, 5 alcohol nurses, 2 research nurses, a specialist pharmacist and a clinical trials assistant.

We provide the full range of non-surgical specialist liver care including TIPSS, a satellite transplant service (with the Royal Free London), antiviral therapy for Hepatitis B&C, complex second line PBC therapies, an award-winning alcohol care team and a pioneering NAFLD clinic. We have dedicated areas for ambulatory care (including nurse-led paracentesis) and a separate clinical area for research trials.

We have a strong track record of delivering studies in chronic liver disease including viral hepatitis, NAFLD, ARLD, PBC, autoimmune hepatitis, decompensated cirrhosis and hepatic encephalopathy. We are the lead site for the UK Polycystic Liver Disease Registry.

In addition to helping deliver NIHR portfolio studies, the post holder will be supported to develop an investigator led project subject to their interests and register for a higher degree if required. As a member of the wider medical Research Fellow team.1 the post holder will contribute to providing some General medical cover and supporting Urgent Public Health studies as required.

Depending on the interests of the appointee, there would also be opportunities to gain some specialist skills in hepatology such as performing Fibroscan or endoscopic management of varices.

Informal enquiries are welcomed. Please contact Dr Richard Aspinall, NIHR Wessex Research Network Lead for Hepatology by email
