In Cellular Pathology department we provide following: -

The department processes a wide range of specimens and applications from individuals with experience of Mohs, Dermatopathology, Renal, Neuropathology, Immunocytochemistry, direct immunofluorescence electron microscopy or non-gynae cytology are particularly welcome. A typical day involves processing and checking cell path preparations and tests.

Who are we looking for?

We are currently seeking a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with relevant experience to join our team. You will be a well-motivated individual looking to develop and extend their skills. Good interpersonal skills are required, with an ability to work effectively both as part of a team and with the confidence and skill to work independently.

To apply for this post, you will have:

  • Registered as a Biomedical scientist with the HCPC.
  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or IBMS Approved alternative science degree plus post graduate certificate in Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • IBMS specialist portfolio in cellular pathology or can demonstrate equivalent qualifications and/ or experience.
  • Relevant post registration laboratory training within Cellular Pathology.
  • Specialist knowledge of cellular pathology work procedures and practices underpinned by theoretical knowledge with specific reference to: - a) H&E and special stains quality control procedures b) Frozen section practice c) Immunocytochemistry quality control procedures d) Participation in EQA submission and review e) Quality Management practices f) Cellular Pathology equipment troubleshooting and basic maintenance.
  • Evidence of ongoing Continuing Professional Development
  • Good hand eye coordination and manual dexterity for handling delicate, often irreplaceable, Cellular Pathology samples.

What will be your main responsibilities?

  • To communicate with colleagues and clinicians about investigations required, discuss validation processes, explain results to others and provide instructions to various groups of health service staff.
  • Day to day management of a laboratory team of Biomedical Scientists, Associate Healthcare Scientist Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
  • Provides practical training and competency assessment for individuals and small groups of laboratories staff.
  • To communicate urgent and clinical results to senior scientific, medical, and clinical staff
  • Analysis and interpretation of test samples and results e.g., sample handling and preparation, internal quality control procedures
  • Investigation of anomalous results, issues and errors with equipment and samples and sample processing
  • Interpretation of clinical information to help decide the best way of analysing and processing specimens including judgements on how to proceed during technical failures.
  • Provides specialist cellular pathology testing services.
  • To rotate through all sections of the laboratory and perform & interpret complex diagnostic tests & results, using specialist technical knowledge and skills to facilitate the diagnosis, evaluation, and monitoring of the patient, commensurate with the requirements of a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist.
