We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative HCPC registered Dietitian to join the multidisciplinary team at Newcastle Diabetes Centre. The specialist team is lead collaboratively by the consultants, specialist nurses, dietitians and other supporting staff. The team strives to be at the forefront of providing quality, innovative diabetes care. This post offers the opportunity to work in a supportive and thriving environment, where skills and knowledge will develop, as new treatments and research evolve.

The role provides an exciting opportunity, to work on a one to one basis with a diverse caseload of patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes; including those on insulin pumps, attending well women clinic, antenatal, renal and a young adult clinics. Also, provide education on, carbohydrate counting, new insulin starts as well as delivering group education including DESMOND and DAFNE (training to achieve qualifications, to facilitate specialist education, will be arranged as needed).

The post holder, will be supervised by the lead diabetes dietitian and work closely with 3 other specialist diabetes dietitians. They will also become a part of the wider community dietetic team, based in modern offices at Regent Point in Gosforth. The majority of the work is undertaken at the newly refurbished, diabetes centre (currently based at the Centre for Ageing and Vitality). Newcastle Hospitals is a paperlite hospital and as such, our community service uses electronic patient records. The team are also involved in a range of nursing and medical education, plus A, B and C dietetic student placement training and supervision.

Good organisational and time management skills are required to thrive in this busy outpatient environment, to meet outcome measures and ensure that the highest quality patient care. Some clinics maybe delivered in the early evening as the service develops; therefore, the ability to work flexibly around this is advantageous.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a keen interest and baseline knowledge in diabetes care. Also, excellent communication skills both with patients and multidisciplinary colleagues. An enthusiasm for undertaking group education is essential. Likewise, given the rapid development and utilisation of technology in this specialist area, e.g. digital blood sugar monitors pumps and virtual platforms for patient education, an interest in developing and implementing skills in this area is important. Training and experience in the use of motivational and behaviour change techniques would be advantageous.

The post requires travel to community settings and a car driver with current driving licence is essential.

This is a full-time post, however part-time/flex working will be considered if a suitable candidate can achieve a significant proportion of the hours.
