Applications are invited to apply for post of NHS Consultant in Infectious Diseases.
This post will combine with the current team of academic and non- academic infection specialists. They will facilitate the movement of the Tropical and Infectious Disease Unit TIDU) into a brand new ‘Royal’due to open in 2022. This brand new unit will be one of the largest in the UK.

The post will be based in the Tropical and Infectious Disease Unit and associated wards of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, part of Liverpool University Foundation Trust. The Directorate combines the clinical expertise of the Tropical & Infectious Disease Unit (TIDU) and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Clinical Pharmacology and the Liverpool Centre for Sexual Health (Department of GU Medicine).

The TIDU is a tertiary referral unit including admissions from the clinics of the LSTM and manages a large spectrum of community acquired and healthcare associated infection in two dedicated wards at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. There is a combined infection consult service with clinical microbiology and virology colleagues, supported by specialist pharmacists to enhance antimicrobial stewardship. There are formal multi-disciplinary care pathways and clinics for tuberculosis, hepatitis C, bone infection and chronic fatigue as well as a large Royal HIV service, which acts as the hub for the Cheshire, Mersey and North Wales HIV Clinical Network. Thu Unit is also commissioned to provide High Consequence Infectious Disease care, as part of the national network.

Inpatient duties include working on the Infectious Disease wards, consults and OPAT for approximately ½ of the year. ½ is also spent on the associated Clinical Pharmacology/General Internal Medicine unit. All ward responsibilities and clinics are shared with other consultant colleagues and supported by a large cadre of NHS and academic medical trainees and multidisciplinary teams. There are many NHS based teaching, training and research opportunities including links to internationally recognised research and teaching expertise in Infection, Tropical Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology. A Clinical Research Unit is located in current RLUH, and can undertake phase 1 studies.

We are looking for a talented, enthusiastic and committed physician who enjoys both infectious diseases and general internal medicine, to join the Directorate. The appointed individual will have training and experience to consultant level in Infectious Diseases (and/or Tropical Medicine) and General Internal Medicine. Additional specialist interests including overseas experience would be desirable. They will have excellent interpersonal and management skills and enthusiasm to engage in and develop complex multidisciplinary care networks.

The appointment will be Consultant in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine, within the sub-Directorate of Tropical and Infectious Diseases, Clinical Pharmacology and Sexual Health within the Specialist Medicine business unit. The candidates must have MRCP (or equivalent) and be present on the specialist registries with the GMC in Infectious Diseases or Tropical Medicine, or be within six months of CCT at the time of the appointment.

The post holder will be allocated 10 programmed activities (PA) per week, of which 8 will be dedicated to clinical activities and 2 supporting (SPA) for clinical professional development and other supporting professional activities, which may increase to 2.5 SPA on negotiation. The Directorate is committed to seven day service and additional weekend ward based care (approximately 1 in 8 weekends) and nonresident on call duties will attract extra remuneration as agreed.
