An opportunity has arisen for two enthusiastic and conscientious individuals to start careers in Healthcare Science, working in the Respiratory Physiology Department within Medical Physics at The Rotherham Foundation Trust. The Respiratory Physiology Service is delivered at a variety of locations across the Trust.

The successful apprentices will be required to undertake the necessary training and academic development needed to perform basic level respiratory tests on patients. The apprentices will also assist other staff with intermediate and advanced procedures; general tasks such as cleaning medical devices, stock control, administration and clerical duties. Training will include a nationally recognised certificate in Spirometry, and an appropriate level 2 healthcare science qualification overseen by Sheffield College. Most of the time you will be learning in the work place but will also be required to attend the local college and complete some distance learning.


You should have 5 GCSEs to include English, Mathematics and Science Grade C or above (or equivalent) as an essential minimum requirement.

The post is full-time and therefore, in order to fulfil the role, if you are in full time education in September you will not be able to apply as candidates will need to be available to commence studies in September 2020. To be eligible for an apprenticeship, applicants must not already hold a level 4 qualification (1st degree)or equivalent in a relevant qualification.Restrictions can also apply for anyone who currently holds a level 2 or 3 qualification in the same area as the framework on offer within the apprenticeship vacancy. The successful applicant may be required on occasions to work independently and as the post will be based in a clinical area, applications will only be accepted from candidates aged 18 or over at date of appointment.

Please note the post of an Respiratory Assistant at band 2 level, is subject to satisfactory achievement & completion of the Apprenticeship Scheme. The qualifications, experience and skills gained provide an opportunity; if successful; to progress to band 2 with a starting salary of £18005 pro rata; to further career progression within Respiratory Physiology & Sleep services for the successful candidates.

The cost of undertaking a DBS disclosure will be met by the individual. The Trust will meet the initial costs of the disclosure, and you can choose to have this deducted from either your first month’s salary or in instalments over your first 3 months’ salary. The current price of a standard check is £23 and an enhanced check is £40.
