Consultant in Adult Intensive Care Medicine with an interest in Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (SARF) and ECMO


Based at the Glenfield Hospital Site

Applications are invited for whole-time or part-time consultant in Intensive Care Medicine with a specialist interest in Acute Respiratory Failure (SARF) and ECMO.

We are seeking a highly trained individual committed to Intensive Care Medicine, with an interest in severe acute respiratory failure and ECMO. The unit is committed to developing research and training in this area. Applicants must hold a CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent) or be within 6 months of obtaining this at the time of interview. Significant experience in both critical care transfer and the management of Adult ECMO patients is essential as is recent experience of cardiothoracic intensive care.

Glenfield brought Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation to the UK 29 years ago and is the only centre to care for patients of all ages from neonate to adult. We were the sole UK provider of adult ECMO until designation of 4 more centres in December 2011, making us the oldest and most experienced centre in the UK with national and international renown. To date we have cared for over 2400 patients of which 1000 have been adults.

One substantive replacement post appointment is sought which will bring the team in Intensive care up to 5 whole time ECMO Intensive Care Consultants at Glenfield hospital, UHL. The critical care unit is funded for 21 level 3 beds admitting in excess of 1500 patients per year.

Following planned service reconfiguration in UHL, it is expected that the unit will expand to 33 beds admitting in excess of 2000 patients per year.

The Government has announced today that Leicester’s Hospitals will be getting £450m of capital investment over the next 5 years to complete our investment and reconfiguration plans. The £450m programme includes two ‘super’ intensive care units with 100 beds in total, almost double the current number, a major planned care Treatment Centre at the Glenfield Hospital and modernised wards, operating theatres and imaging facilities.

The successful applicant will be expected to make a significant contribution to the continued development of Adult ECMIO and critical care services in UHL They will be required to undertake management duties, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical audit at activity at Glenfield Hospital.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust consists of three acute teaching hospitals serving the population of Leicestershire and the wider region. It is fully committed to Continuing Medical Education for Consultants.
