Job Summary:

A Solutions Architect role within the Ambulance Radio Programme is a senior technical position that requires specialist skills in 2G/3G/4G/LTE technologies. This includes having the knowledge and experience of working in agile software development environments. The purpose of the role is to work with stakeholders to specify, design and select Control Room Solutions that deliver the required utility and warranty required by the end users.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all technical elements involved in planning, design, options appraisal, testing and delivery of the end product. This will include interfaces to other national and local programmes.

  • Investigate and inform on latest 2G, 3G and 4G device related technology and be the technical expert providing knowledge on future technical trends.

  • Carry out assessments on specific areas of technology including Control Room and Mobile Device Technologies and associated protocols and will provide clear technical guidance to the associated technical, service and user communities.

  • The ability to build strong and effective working relationships with other service management and technical disciplines, suppliers, users across the Ambulance Trusts, the wider NHS and managing the conflicting demands and tensions of a range of stakeholders.

  • A thorough understanding of managed service contracts and experience of the management of the local delivery of a national, high value, mission critical and complex service. Extensive expert knowledge of the working practices of emergency services control rooms and operational staff.

  • A detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of the best practice contained with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library and how this can be used to drive continual service improvement.


    The post holder must be capable of translating highly complex technical information for non-technical staff to understand. The role requires well developed communications and relationship management skills. The post holder will be required to maintain relationships with a range of suppliers, Ambulance Trusts and other emergency services. ARP delivers critical communications to the Ambulance service and hence the discussion of issues related to its delivery may be sensitive and contentious and will take place in a highly emotive atmosphere

Experience (1 or more of the following):

  • At least 8 years of working in 1 or multiple IT areas

  • IT infrastructure or cloud development

  • Project & Product Management (Essential)

  • Engineering and Software Architecture Design

    Essential/Desirable Education/Qualifications include:

  • Degree level education


  • TOGAF9

  • ISEB Solution and Enterprise Architecture

  • CCNP
