At NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), tissue and organ retrieval are vital first steps in effective donation and transplantation. Their efforts are a fundamental part of our goal to be the best donation service in the world, but we need a dedicated Retrieval Team Leader within the Tissue and Eye Services to make this happen. NHSBT Tissue and Eye Services is the largest multi-tissue banking organisation in the UK and Europe. It’s a significant leader in the development of international standards, policies and regulation in its field. Within the service, you will lead a committed and multi-skilled team to meet the deceased retrieval demand.

 

This is a fast moving and variable environment, and your role is essential in the donation of tissues from deceased donors that will directly contribute to the saving and improving of patients’ lives. The role is also an excellent opportunity to develop your skills in a number of areas. Your responsibilities include supporting on the operational activity of the surgical donation programmes, communicating with a range of stakeholders to provide complex and highly sensitive information and supervising your team’s tissue retrieval from donors in a variety of locations.

 

You will also be a role model for service excellence and drive service improvement using specialist expertise. There’s also a coaching element to the role, as you will be expected to train and mentor new and less experienced colleagues. But just as much, we will make sure you receive excellent development opportunities yourself, along with full support for your career ambitions.

 

You will have experience handling deceased patients, human blood and tissue, as well as a sound understanding of the need for dignity, respect and confidentiality at this stage of the donation process. You will also have experience working unsupervised or supervising the work of others in this type of environment. Knowledge of our Tissue and Eye Services would be desirable but not essential.

 

In terms of skills, you will be an effective communicator and able to liaise with a wide range of stakeholders at all levels. Being able to organise your own workload and deal with competing demands is essential, but you should also be able to motivate others and bring a positive attitude to everything you do. You will also be proficient with Microsoft Office packages, and able to lift and carry items up to 15kg in weight without the use of mechanical aids.

 

You should have a BSc in a biological discipline or hold relevant equivalent experience. You should also either hold or be working towards accreditation as a Tissue Bank Technologist (AHCS) or equivalent. A full and valid UK driving license is also essential.

 

Please note that you will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.
