Stem Cells Liverpool - Service
Location:

Salary:
£37,570 to £43,772 pa

NHS Blood & Transplant is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking.

The Stem Cells and Immunotherapies (SCI) Department at Liverpool analyses, processes and issues peripheral blood stem cells for patients undergoing haemopoietic stem cell transplantation. Our laboratory also incorporates an Advanced Therapies Unit (ATU) which places us at the forefront of clinical improvements, working in partnership with academic and commercial partners to develop and produce novel cellular investigational medicinal products for use in clinical trials.

We currently have an opportunity for a Cell Therapy Advanced Specialist to join us and to lead on Quality Control (QC) and regulatory compliance across ATU and SCI services. We’re looking for an experienced scientist with a relevant MSc or equivalent qualification, ideally with substantial experience in cell culture, development of novel cell or gene therapies and/or ATMP manufacture. Experience of working in an NHS or pharmaceutical environment in a quality focused role would be an advantage, as would practical experience using flow cytometry and other cell biology techniques and demonstration of a detailed understanding of QC. You will be capable of ensuring cells and/or tissue products meet all specifications necessary for patient safety and therapeutic use according to internal and external quality requirements and operating within the boundaries of good manufacturing and laboratory practice, with meticulous record keeping skills. You will have a working knowledge of basic IT packages and quality management systems.

This senior position requires a good team player, capable of proactively managing a demanding workload and motivating yourself and others as you tackle a wide variety of tasks. Working within HTA and MHRA licensed laboratories requires diligence, discipline and an attention to detail. Candidates who possess such attributes are encouraged to apply.

In return you’ll benefit from an excellent pension, and the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, at the cutting edge of the emerging fields of cellular therapies and regenerative medicine, where you can develop your specialist skills and scientific education.

The normal working hours for this role are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Candidates will be required to participate in the department on call rota, following appropriate training, which may involve weekend and/or weekday evening/overnight cover, the details of which can be discussed at interview.

For an informal discussion in relation to this role, or to arrange a visit to our facility, please contact Vivien Hanson at vivien.hanson@nhsbt.nhs.uk

Closing date for applications is Sunday 22nd September 2019.

Interviews will take place on Wednesday 2nd October.
