NHS Blood & Transplant is an integral part of the NHS, collecting and processing 2 million blood donations a year. Our Healthcare Scientists provide crucial support to NHS Hospitals, processing, testing and issuing blood and its components and delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services relating to the transfusion of blood and stem cells, transplantation and tissue banking.

 

The Cellular and Molecular Therapies function of NHSBT comprises seven Stem Cells & Immunotherapies laboratories throughout the country and the Clinical Biotechnology Centre in Bristol, providing a range of life saving therapies. Our work in Stem Cells and Immunotherapies (SCI) based in Liverpool is central to the provision and improvement of haemopoietic and other stem cell transplants. In Liverpool we have an Advanced Therapies Unit (ATU) allowing us to be at the forefront of clinical improvements by helping produce investigational medicinal products for use in clinical trials using our expertise in GMP, quality and regulatory matters.

 

We currently have an opportunity for a Cell Therapy Advanced Specialist to join us and play a key role in the development of novel cellular therapies (ATMPs) within the ATU, initially focussing on the development of mesenchymal stem cell based therapies. We’re looking for an experienced scientist with a relevant MSc qualification or equivalent, ideally with substantial experience in cell culture, development of novel cell or gene therapies and/or ATMP manufacture. You will be capable of ensuring cells and/or tissue products meet all specifications necessary for patient safety and therapeutic use according to internal and external quality requirements and operating within the boundaries of good manufacturing and laboratory practice. You will have a working knowledge of basic IT packages and quality management systems.

 

This senior position requires a motivated team player with initiative and meticulous record keeping skills, capable of proactively managing a demanding workload and motivating yourself and others. The normal working hours for this role are 37.5 hours per week. This role may involve occasional evening and weekend working however, this will be project specific. There is the possibility of on call working, which can be discussed at interview.
