An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual to work as part of the Stroke Specialist Nursing Team at the RVI. The RVI Stroke Service is a leading provider of hyperacute stoke care in the UK and is recognised as the best performing unit in the North East. The Stroke Specialist Nursing Team provide 24/7 cover to the RVI ED and acute Stroke unit based on WD 41 at the RVI, allowing for rapid access to early stroke recognition, emergency interventions and treatments as well as the consideration for hyeracute stroke research studies. The role is vitally important to the patient pathway and has been very effective in achieving improved patient outcomes. You will need to be enthusiastic, committed and passionate about providing excellent patient care, and be flexible to the needs of the service.


The main aspects of the stroke specialist nursing role include:

  • Triage of stroke referrals from NEAS, GPs, other wards and departments within the trust.

  • Early stroke recognition, and initiation of the emergency stroke pahway,

  • Management of the patient undergoing thrombolysis/thrombectomy

  • Management of patients with intracerebral heamorrhage

  • Management of patients with suspected TIA

  • Patient education and health promotion

  • Research and audit

  • Co-ordination of regional referrals for possible neurosurgical intervention following acute stroke

  • Training and Education of Stroke unit nursing staff/ ED staff.

You will need to be able to work independently as well as within a team, possess effective organization and time management skills and be able to stay calm under pressure. Experience of caring for stroke patients would be beneficial, some post registration experience within related specialist area of practice is essential. You should possess good IT skills and ideally will have current or previous experience of research and audit. Venepuncture and cannulation skills desirable but not essential as training can be provided.
