West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory (WMRGL)

A number of exciting opportunities have arisen for Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) registered Genetic Technologists, both permanent and fixed term, to work within the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory based at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

 

The West Midland Regional Genetics Laboratory, based at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS FT, is the central laboratory for the West Midlands, Oxford and Wessex Genomics Laboratory Hub network, serving 11 million people across the geography.

 

The network of Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs) will be an integral part of the national Genomic Medicine Service providing state of the art, high quality genomic analysis to patients with rare disease and/or cancer. The pace of change is exponential with Genomics being placed at the heart of the future NHS. Our workforce will be fundamental to the successful delivery of this ambitious and high profile service.

 

We are looking for highly motivated individuals who are committed to a career in laboratory diagnostic genetics and we invite applications from individuals who are registered as a Genetic Technologist with the AHCS. However, given the broad range of opportunities that we have available we also invite applications from individuals with appropriate qualifications and experience who are willing to work towards registration. All posts are rotational throughout the technical team and may include roles supporting the clinical teams where they will undertake supervised testing and reporting of specialised genomic investigations. Full competence based training will be given. We are very much committed to continuous development and have an active seminar programme available to all staff.

 

Applicants should have good interpersonal skills and be capable of working under pressure to tight deadlines. They should be team players with previous laboratory experience, looking to expand their knowledge and experience in diagnostic genetics, have a strong interest in driving and improving the quality of diagnostic services and be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Understanding of genomic technology and some experience in the interpretation of scientific data are desirable.

 

WMRGL currently performs in excess of 70,000 tests per annum employing over 230 scientific, technical and support staff in service delivery and research. The laboratory is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory (no. 8176) and is part of the West Midlands Genomic Medicine Centre in the 100,000 genome project.

 

Over the last 5 years WMRGL has significantly expanded its research portfolio, securing over £5 million of R&D funding for projects covering a diverse spectrum of genetic disorders including cancer, developmental delay, and prenatal testing for genetic abnormalities. The laboratory is one of three Technology Hubs for the Cancer Research UK Stratified Medicine Programme. WMRGL also hosts the Central England Haemato-oncology Research Biobank (CEHRB). We work closely with our Clinical Genetics Service, Birmingham Health Partners and the University of Birmingham, and with diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries.

 

Appointment will be dependent on qualifications and experience.
