At NHSBT we stand for hope. We stand for life. We stand for helping people do something extraordinary, saving and improving the lives of others. Are you ready to play your part?

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) offers the type of challenge that wouldn’t usually be associated with an IT role. That’s because as the UK’s only supplier of tissue, blood and organs, the work we do enhances and saves lives every single day. Thousands and thousands of people have already benefitted from our crucial activities, and with a huge amount of ongoing research and development in the pipeline, we’ll continue transforming the health of the nation for many years to come. But none of that would be possible without the incredible staff who support our nurses and doctors. Their work enables our front-line staff to get on with the important job of performing transplants and transfusions. It’s a collaborative team effort, and one that we’d like you to join.

Heading up a team of systems developers, you will guide their working day, ensuring tasks are delegated to the most appropriate person, and overseeing the quality of the end product.

Ensuring the strategic objectives of the IT team are consistently met, your guidance and analysis will secure the efficient development and deployment of application software, information systems and database services, using the relevant tools and technology at your disposal – resulting in better IT capabilities for frontline NHSBT staff. As our technical expert and providing consistent support to the Head of Systems Development & Integration, you’ll be the go-to authority for all systems developed and maintained by this highly-skilled team.

This is a fantastic role in which you can indulge your passion for emerging technologies and trends, conducting research and shaping the future of our capabilities. You will therefore have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage external providers and your in-house team, and will work well with other teams such as Business Intelligence. With strong people management skills gained in an organisation in which you designed, developed and maintained information systems, your technical expertise will encompass a broad area of software development that includes the majority of the following:

  • Extensive experience of the design, development, management and maintenance of information systems across a large organisation, including database modelling theory
  • Management and leadership experience

    • XML, XSD, JSON
    • Network architecture and protocols such as SNMP, HTTP, SOAP, SOA-Web Services
    • Agile / Lean and Traditional methodologies

    • VSTS
    • ServiceNow
    • SharePoint and Office 365 applications
  • Knowledge of IT best practice as stipulated by the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
  • Knowledge and experience of change management

If you also have a degree in Computer Science, the ability to guide change and influence others, and the willingness to work away from home occasionally, then we’d love to talk. This role is career-defining, with immense scope to develop and grow in our passionate team. If you’re ready to join an organisation that values the input of each and every employee, then we’ve got a role for you.

Tier 2 Certificate of Sponsorship

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. The UK Visas and Immigration department requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

From 6 April 2017, Tier 2 skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, must present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.
