Frail Older Persons Assessment and Liaison Service (FOPALs)

Band 6 – 1WTE post working across 7 days (As this is a service development the hours will be reviewed in response to need)

As part of developing our liaison services within UHL we have funding for a Band 6 FOPAL post.

The FOPAL team is based in the Leicester Royal Infirmary and provide assessments for over 65's presenting in the acute medical setting with primary or co-morbid mental health problems. We offer an urgent assessment service to people attending the Emergency Departments in times of mental health crisis, and an assessment and liaison service to the medical wards across the 3 UHL sites. The service operates 9am-5pm seven days a week (LRI emergency departments only at weekends).

The FOPAL team experiences a high number of referrals which can be complex and challenging. This provides an excellent opportunity to enhance your practice and develop your nursing skills. We would require an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced RMN, with relevant post registration experience. You would work as part of the established FOPALs team and would need to demonstrate flexibility and a commitment to high standards of patient care.

You will need to be able to independently and confidently complete mental health assessments and develop formulations. The successful candidate must have a good understanding and knowledge around thorough clinical risk assessment.

You should have excellent communications skills and the ability to work alone and as part of a team. We are proud of our multi-disciplinary team approach, providing holistic mental and physical healthcare.

The team has close working partnerships with Geriatricians, UHL wards and secondary mental health care. There is an expectation that you would provide some education and teaching regarding mental health issues, to other staff.

We have a strong commitment to supervision, training and regular appraisal, from which you will benefit.

In order to be considered for these posts - you will have already gained experience in mental health nursing within an acute setting (in-patient, crisis team) and have robust and sound clinical assessment and decision-making skills including the ability to prioritise your workload whilst maintaining a degree of flexibility to accommodate competing demands of the service when they arise.

You will have an up-to-date knowledge of national and local policies. Furthermore the ability to meet local Trust targets in relation to quick response times is essential. The post requires excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and the ability to work in a dynamic and busy environment. As always, we expect decision-making to be made in collaboration with our service users and carers with a view to facilitating treatment in the least restrictive environment.
