Job summary

Haverhill Family Practice is looking for a healthcare assistant (HCA) to join the practice on a part-time basis, for 20 hours per week: Monday - Thursday, 13:00 - 18:00.

Working under the direct supervision of the senior practice nurse, and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant (HCA) works as part of the primary healthcare team, supporting GPs, nurses, and other clinical staff in delivering high-quality patient care. The post-holder will undertake a range of clinical and administrative duties, promoting patient health and wellbeing while ensuring care is delivered safely, effectively, and in accordance with practice policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform venepuncture (blood taking) following appropriate training and competency assessment.
  • Carry out ECGs.
  • Undertake NHS health checks and other health promotion activities.
  • Measure and record: blood pressure, height and weight, BMI calculations, pulse rate, oxygen saturation levels, temperature.
  • Conduct simple wound care and dressings as delegated by a registered clinician.
  • Remove sutures and clips where appropriately trained.
  • Undertake urinalysis and prepare specimens for laboratory collection.
  • Administer vaccinations where trained and authorised under appropriate protocols.
  • Support chronic disease monitoring including diabetic foot checks.
  • Ensure clinical equipment is cleaned, maintained, and calibrated in accordance with practice procedures.
  • The use of blood centrifuge.
  • Chaperoning duties.
  • Re-stocking consulting rooms.
  • Attending housebound patients for blood samples and administering influenza/covid vaccines.
  • Assist GP, if required, with minor surgery procedures.
  • Assist with infection prevention and control measures.

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and mathematics.
