Job responsibilities

Essential criteria:

• Have (or nearing completion of) MSc (or BSc) qualification in Human Factors/Ergonomics accredited by the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF)
• Graduate Member of the CIEHF or eligible for Graduate membership
• Knowledge of the application of Human Factors to manage Health and Safety Risks in work contexts
• Experience of carrying out applied Human Factors academic research
• Proven ability to manage their own learning and development

Desirable criteria:

• Health and Safety experience, supporting a duty holder or in a regulatory role.
• Experience and/or knowledge of work in biological containment facilities
• Ability to design applied Human Factors research projects particularly in areas related to biosafety
• Ability to provide Human Factors training to non-specialist audiences
• Ability to contribute to and lead Human Factors work programmes
• Ability to solve complex human factor issues and prioritise system objectives, including those arising from incident investigations
• Ability to champion Human Factors and advise and influence colleagues

Stage 2: Interview

You will be invited to a remote interview over MS Teams.

UKHSA is in the process of developing and implementing a Human Factors strategy based on the topics and approach detailed in HSE's Operational Delivery Guide: Inspecting Human Factors at COMAH establishments. (Available at:https://www.hse.gov.uk/comah/assets/docs/hf-delivery-guide.pdf ).

As part of the interview, you will be required to prepare a short presentation (10 minutes). The HSE Operational Delivery Guide covers 6 Human Factors topics. You will select one of the Human Factors topics and explain how your academic study, work experience and interests are relevant and useful to this topic and suggest some ways in which you feel you might contribute to developing and implementing a strategy

Location

This role is being offered as hybrid working based at one of our Core HQs in Birmingham, Liverpool or London (Canary Wharf); or one of our Scientific Campuses in London (Colindale), Porton Down or Didcot.

As a hybrid worker, you will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of your contractual working hours (approximately 3 days a week pro rata, averaged over a month) on-site.

Option 1 - External

Security clearance level requirement

Part 1

Successful candidates must pass a standard Disclosure and Barring Security (DBS) check before they can be appointed.

Part 2

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Security Check clearance.

For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out, individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 5 years to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance. UK residency less than the outlined periods may not necessarily bar you from gaining national security vetting at this higher level.

Salary information

If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary.Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
