The States of Guernsey are looking for a Biomedical Scientist to join the Clinical Chemistry team within the Pathology Department.
The Clinical Chemistry Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital provides a comprehensive service to the Bailiwick of Guernsey which includes the islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm.
The Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry participates in the provision of a comprehensive, robust and cost-effective diagnostic Clinical Chemistry service on behalf of the Health and Social Care Committee to the highest standards, acting in accordance with Clinical Governance procedures.
The department of Clinical Chemistry interacts with a wide range of stakeholders, and the post holder will interact with both professional colleagues and the public.
They must be able to provide advice to clinicians and service users regarding technical aspects of Clinical Chemistry, within their scope of practice and experience.
The role requires a graduate level of theoretical and practical knowledge of Clinical Chemistry, and a working knowledge of immunology and viral serology.
The post holder is required to contribute to the training and supervision of support and administrative staff within the IBMS training guidelines.
Working individually or as part of a small team they will contribute to the development of new procedures and practices for specialist Clinical Chemistry investigations.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Chemistry Department at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital provides a comprehensive service to Bailiwick of Guernsey which includes the islands of Alderney, Sark and Herm.
The Clinical Chemistry department analyses a broad repertoire of approximately 120 clinical chemistry assays. In addition, the department performs immunology testing and viral serology testing to support both clinical requesting and the local blood donor service. The Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Chemistry participates in the provision of a comprehensive, robust and cost-effective diagnostic Clinical Chemistry service
The department of Clinical Chemistry interacts with a wide range of stakeholders, and the post holder will interact with both professional colleagues and the public. They must be able to provide advice to clinicians and service users regarding technical aspects of Clinical Chemistry, within their scope of practice and experience.

Job responsibilities
Process Clinical Chemistry samples in accordance with all relevant Clinical Governance, working independently within occupational and departmental policies, procedures and codes of conduct.
Perform technical processes in all sections of the laboratory, carrying out laboratory investigations on pathology samples and taking responsibility for quality and accuracy of the results produced.
Determine the suitability of specimens arriving in the laboratory and appropriateness for the tests requested. When necessary, advise clinical colleagues of sample issues and proper remedial actions to ensure quality of results and patient care.
Prepare specimens for analysis determining urgency and processing priority. Specimens will also include delicate, often small or unrepeatable samples.
Interpret complex results and accurately convey this information for interpretation and decisions on reflex testing.
Using knowledge and experience, scrutinise anomalous results in light of complex clinical indications to make initial interpretation and prepare results of investigations for communication to senior BMS.
Prepare results in a timely manner and promptly inform the requesting clinician of abnormal or clinically significant results where a delay could compromise patient care.
Deal with basic enquiries specific to the Clinical Chemistry department, including correct specimen types and collection conditions for a range of clinical situations, ensuring service users needs are met.
Undertake preventative maintenance and calibration on complex laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations.
Carry out first line equipment and basic methodology troubleshooting during technical failures. Risk assess complex situations using professional judgement to ensure safe practice and operation of the analysers often under clinical time pressures, referring to a more senior BMS as necessary.
Assist in maintenance and troubleshooting of Point of Care devices, such as the Radiometer ABL90 Flex plus blood gas analysers situated on hospital wards.
Where required, be responsible for ensuring adequate reagent levels, stock control and quality checks on reagents and consumables required for laboratory investigations, as directed by the Head of Department.
Work flexibly across the wider working patterns of the Clinical Chemistry team.
Review and comment on Standard Operating Procedures, in conjunction with senior BMS and the Head of Department, using theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure a quality service fit for purpose.
Assist in developing new quality and governance procedures in conjunction with and as directed by the Head of Department with awareness of current developments within Biomedical Science.
Update and maintain departmental quality records as part of the departments quality systems process to ensure test results meet accepted standards.
Assist in the sending of patient samples to referral laboratories for tests not performed in the local Clinical Chemistry department.
