Job summary
Exciting opportunity for someone to join the Maternity Team in CTMUHB in a Public Health Support worker role providing support to pregnant people and their families to successfully quit smoking . After a period of training and induction the successful candidate will work as part of a team of Specialist Maternity Support Workers providing a hybrid service of face to face and telephone support. Directly accountable to the Public Health Specialist Midwife the role includes working with other agencies and professionals including midwives, community pharmacists, the Help Me Quit team and other members of the maternity service. This role will help improve the health of our birthing people and their families in line with Welsh Government 's Public Health agenda and addressing the aim of developing a Smoke free Wales by 2030. There will be 1- 2 full times positions although a job share maybe considered.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
- Complete training and induction program
- Support the Public Health Specialist Midwife to implement the smoke free pregnancy initiative
- Educate pregnant women about the benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy and give support to those women wanting to quit. Promote smoke free homes and advise on passive smoking and the risks involved
- Provide smoking cessation support in line with the evidence base and the pathways
- Deliver flexible support including face to face home visits, phone calls, texts and emails
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring in line with local protocol and Investigate high CO readings in non-smokers
- Determine an individual's nicotine dependency , provide advice on available stop smoking medication , how to use it, possible side effects and safe storage, working within local protocols and guidelines.
- Work with pharmacists
- Develop an action plan with the client according to their individual needs, organise and deliver smoking cessation support according to agreed pathways. Utilise motivational interviewing techniques records and inputting them into a database such as Quit Manager to provide accurate and comprehensive data for reporting and service improvement.
- File records on maternity notes in a timely manner and feed back to Maternity service when appropriate.
- Use comprehensive computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail and the Quit Manager smoking cessation database
- Travel across CTM to participate in meetings and service delivery.
