Job summary

Following recent Welsh Government investment, we have a number of vacancies for registered nurses who would enjoy the challenge and unique experience of working in HM Prison Cardiff. The prison is a remand center, covering the courts of SE Wales, with space for 800 men.

Working as part of a recently extended multi-disciplinary team, successful candidates will provide care to prisoners with a wide range of mental and physical health problems, including substance misuse issues. We are particularly interested in staff who have skills in primary care, acute or emergency medicine as well as those with specialist skills in mental health.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will be involved in organizing admissions and the discharge of prisoners, assessing, planning and evaluating care. The role will involve close collaboration with other members of the MDT to ensure the provision of holistic and person centered care, taking account of the ongoing care and support needs of the prisoners on their release from prison. This role offers the opportunity to work in conjunction with a wide range of partners from both within the Prison Service and with services for vulnerable groups within the community. There is also an opportunity to be engaged in the planning and development of healthcare services within HM Prison Cardiff and be engaged in student training and education programmes.

Interested candidates will need to be able to demonstrate an ability to work autonomously with patients who have complex needs, using evidence based, and patient centered principles. Excellent communication skills are required in terms of being able to discuss and articulate highly complex and sensitive information relating to the care and management of prisoners' health. Emotional resilience is also essential given the demands of the environment.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
