A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join STEPS as part of the Specialist Spinal Rehabilitation team.
STEPS has recently been awarded spinal injuries team of the year at the SIA awards 2024 and provide specialist rehabilitation for individuals from all over the UK and abroad who have sustained spinal injuries. Clients are admitted at different stages in their recovery, from major trauma centres, spinal injury units or other providers.

The role of the Specialist Spinal Rehabilitation Occupational Therapist (OT) is to provide high quality holistic therapy to our clients throughout their journey alongside the inter-disciplinary team.

STEPS is a purpose-built 23-bedroom, unique rehabilitation facility, able to deliver high-quality care from a range of medical and rehabilitation specialists on Abbeydale Road, Sheffield. It is a unique environment that provides rehabilitation to clients who have suffered serious injuries and debilitating neurological illnesses.
STEPS has been designed to feel non-clinical, comfortable and homely and we hope you will agree STEPS is like no other care facility you will have worked in. Our specialists work collaboratively under one roof and clients can access a wide range of therapies and specialist robotic and VR rehabilitation equipment. You will be working within our interdisciplinary team comprised of Consultants in rehabilitation medicine; spinal injuries, amputations, anaesthetics, plastic surgery and pain management, physiotherapists; occupational therapists; speech and language therapists; neuro-psychologists; neurologic music therapist; prosthetic and orthotic specialists and amongst other nurses experienced in complex care. To deliver specialist OT assessment and intervention to clients within specialist clinical area
To assess and provide OT assessment and intervention, addressing occupational performance in the areas of self-care, leisure and productivity
To undertake the client key worker role within STEPS Rehabilitation
To involve clients and carers in the development and delivery of goals within the rehabilitation plan
To assess, implement and monitor individual client rehabilitation plans
Carry out community visits to support a clients goals and transition from STEPS, for example accessible leisure activities
Identify a range of specialist equipment to optimise functional independence, quality of life and manage risk
To complete required documentation including clinical notes and comprehensive reports within a timely manner
To ensure accurate recording and monitoring of relevant outcome measures
To apply manual handling principles as outlined by legislation and department procedures
To adhere to and carry out individual client risk assessments
In conjunction with the wider interdisciplinary team, to ensure personal care and nutritional needs of clients are met
To be flexible and able to offer support to other clinical areas as required
To have an awareness and knowledge of current evidence-based OT practice and research in spinal injuries and complex trauma
To initiate and lead on service development projects in conjunction with the wider interdisciplinary team e.g, education, training, audits with support from Lead OT/ Head of Therapies
To identify service equipment needs and resources to the Lead OT/ Head of Therapy
To be compliant with the clinical governance requirements operating within STEPS procedures
To act upon and escalate issues as required following STEPS guidance and operating procedures
To adhere to the Royal College of OT code of ethics and professional conduct

- Postgraduate Masters level module in relevant subject or equivalent knowledge and skills accumulated through formal training and experience.
