Specialist Speech & Language Therapist (Learning Disabilities)

Job summary

We are pleased to offer an excitingFixed-Term Specialist Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) - Band 6 position within the Triborough Learning Disability Team for a period of 10 months. This service operates across the boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster,providing a community-based service to adults with learning disabilities from age 18, as well as supporting transition from children's services.

Our multidisciplinary team delivers integrated, patient-centred care. This post provides a fantastic opportunity for a Speech & Language Therapist to develop expertise in both communication and dysphagia management, contributing directly to improving the health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities. The role will enable professional growth in line with national policy and evidence-based practice guidance, offering hands-on experience in a vibrant community setting.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for, including but not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing Speech & Language Therapy strategies to meet the needs of adults with learning disabilities.
  • Delivering health promotion activities to support patients' communication and swallowing needs.
  • Providing clinical input for an identified caseload of patients with complex needs.
  • Working collaboratively with a wide range of professionals, including colleagues in primary and secondary care, carers, advocacy groups, voluntary sector organisations, care providers and the acute sector.
  • Setting and maintaining high standards of professional practice while remaining a flexible and adaptable member of the team.
  • Demonstrating excellent communication skills, engaging and motivating both professional staff and clients.
  • Contributing to a supportive and inclusive service environment that values patient empowerment, compassionate care and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Essential

  • First degree and Licence to Practise from the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
  • Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
  • Post graduate training in clinical areas relevant to the post e.g. Makaton, Clinical Supervision, PECS, Talking Mats.

Desirable

  • RCSLT post graduate accredited Dysphagia qualification Interaction, or working towards accreditation

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with Adults with learning disabilities
  • Experience of the assessment and treatment of Adult Dysphagia
  • Administering clinical assessments and analysing them
  • Development and implementation of programs of care
  • Communicating information clearly to parent/carers and service users
  • Working independently with a joint communication and Dysphagia caseload
