Job summary

The appointment will be as a Tutor Dental Hygienist and Therapist for 15 hours per week. The contract will be with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Birmingham Dental Hospital, home to the University of Birmingham's School of Dentistry, is one of only 10 dental hospitals in England.

Service provision, education and research form key components, with consultant-led dental specialties providing treatment for around 115,000 attendances each year, together with undergraduate and postgraduate training for dental students, dental nurses, dental hygienists and therapists.

The Dental Hospital provides a unique range of dental services for the people of West Midlands and further afield. It is an integral part of the University of Birmingham, School of Dentistry and is there to support undergraduate and postgraduate dental education. Birmingham School of Dental Hygiene and Therapy enables students to complete a BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy.

Main duties of the job

The principal duties are to facilitate learning and to teach the knowledge and clinical skills required by students of Dental Hygiene and Therapy. They will advise, demonstrate, and instruct on the dental clinic, and in the phantom head laboratory, and be responsible for the care provided by students when treating patients. The tutor will deliver teaching in a variety of formats, e.g. lecture, workshop, tutorial and small group teaching.

Job responsibilities

Preparation and delivery of lectures and tutorials to the students in accordance with the School curriculum.

Presentation of complex information to diverse groups of students.

Compilation and marking of class tests, examination question papers, essays, and practical and clinical assessments, in conjunction with the other teaching staff of the School.

Supervision of student Dental Hygienists & Therapists during placements in other establishments within the Trust on the occasions this may be required.

Assess students knowledge, attitude, clinical skills, professionalism and performance in their studies.

Assist with student welfare and student support in conjunction with other staff of the school.

Participate in personal development review and appraisal meetings, resulting in specific objectives and effective personal development plans in line with the Knowledge and Skills Outline Framework and understand where these fit within the objectives and strategic direction of the Specialist Division of BCHC Trust.

Attend mandatory training as required.

Participate in curriculum audit and improvement, designing and implementing new teaching and assessment strategies.

The tutor will implement Trust policies and procedures. The wider policies of the University of Birmingham are also implemented for academic quality issues.

Implementation of policies and procedures is also dictated by the General Dental Council, in relation to delivery of the required curriculum within the law.

The tutor will utilise computer software to develop student hand-outs, audit reports, PowerPoint presentations and E-learning packages.
