Job summary
We have a number of exciting positions to offer either on a fixed term or permanent contracts for the
role of Paediatric Specialty Doctors (Middle grade) to join our paediatric team at Darlington Memorial
Hospital.
These posts are full time non-training middle-grade posts (tier 2) in acute paediatrics.
Applicants must have achieved competencies at ST3 level in paediatrics or equivalent, with ongoing 2nd
on-call experience covering both general paediatrics and neonatal unit. The post holder will work as an
integral member of the paediatric team at middle-grade level
Main duties of the job
This post is suitable for applicants with an interest in acute paediatrics. There are opportunities to gain
experience in teaching medical students, delivering simulation sessions and participating in out-patient
clinics based on interest and experience.
This is not a recognised training post, however there will be opportunities for training in general
Paediatrics and some Pediatric subspecialties within our department. We have a robust departmental
teaching programme and you can access regional courses and conferences in North-East England.
We support doctors to progress with their exams, enhance clinical competencies and support
experienced doctors with CESR application.
DMH has an active Postgraduate Centers with a good library facility and are acknowledged for
excelence in education.

Duties of the post
Provision of inpatient paediatric and neonatal service, including providing 2nd oncall cover for
attending high-risk deliveries
Contribution to the on call middle grade rota for managing a range of paediatric and neonatal
emergencies. Duties include 1 in 9 provision of oncall cover for evenings, weekends and night shifts
(Mon Thurs or Fri Sun night cover). There is consideration to increase workforce to enable a 1 in 10
rota.
Rota consists of standard 0900-1700 shifts, longdays from 0900-2100, twilight shifts 1400-2200 and
night shifts 2030-0930 including similar hours during weekends
Training and refresher for NLS, EPALS and safeguarding level 2 & 3 is provided within the trust
Opportunity for outpatient care (for experienced candidates) under the direction supervision of a
Consultant Paediatrician
Supervised assessment of children presenting with child protection concerns
Participate in the audit programme and medical students teaching
Attendance at departmental, educational and clinical governance meetings
Department encourages quality improvement projects, abstracts and regional presentations
There is limited study leave and budget to support professional development
Practice for MRCPCH clinical exams is supported through local and regional mentoring.
The Tier-2 (Middle-Grade) rota consists of acute paediatric trainees, community paediatric trainees,
APNPs and trust appointed registrars.
The Tier-1 (SHO) rota includes 4 monthly rotation of Foundation trainees; and 6 monthly rotation of GP
trainees and Paediatric trainees; working alongside trust appointed clinical fellows.
There is adequate staff on each rota to allow annual leave, swaps for cover and study leave for
attending courses or conferences.
