Job summary

This new role is to work within the emerging Health & Justice sector of the Specialist Services Network at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The Health and Justice division of the specialist network is currently headquartered on the Prestwich hospital site.

The post-holder will be a Consultant with psychiatry experience and will be expected to work within the region as part of a health and justice medical team. Although no specific prison will be allocated every effort will be made to ensure that some acknowledgment is given to the preference the postholder may have.

In general terms the postholder will be expected to support the management of mental health clinics, undertaking mental health assessments of prisoners who will be prioritised based on clinical need. This will usually necessitate assessment of risk and treatment need, prescribing of medication, arrangement of follow up and support of care planning arrangements under CPA. The postholder may be required to undertake Mental Health Act assessments in order to support transfer of prisoners to hospital and to liaise with services as required in order to achieve this. This will be as part of a multidisciplinary team involving community psychiatric nurses, psychological well being practitioners, psychologists, recovery workers etc.

Main duties of the job

This new role is to work within the emerging Health & Justice sector of the Specialist Services Network at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will be a Consultant with at least 3-4 years of psychiatry training and experience. The post-holder will be attached to the Health & Justice Service of the Specialist Services Network.

The postholder will be expected to work within the region as part of a health and justice medical team. Although no specific prison will be allocated as part of a contract every effort is made to ensure that someacknowledgment is given to any preference the postholder may have. There is an expectation that the post holder will be conversant with the model of care delivered into a range of the prisons we input into so that cover can be provided in the event that it may be required. Flexibility is encouraged in relation to off site working and any non technical work in relation to the supporting of professional activities and training etc. There is occasional requirement for remote working and appropriate technological support will be provided to enable this as required. The postholder will receive orientation and induction and will be supported in accessing training in order to confidently embark on their role in these interesting settings.
