Job summary

We are delighted to present an exciting development opportunity for someone who would like to move into care delivery, or for those who already have a caring role and may like to expand their skills. As part of our pledge for a Smoke Free Trust, York & Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is supporting those people who smoke and attend hospital, with an offer of Tobacco Dependency Treatment. The Trust is looking to recruit 3 colleagues to deliver tobacco dependency treatment across our Trust sites.

We are looking to appoint people who are enthusiastic about helping people to improve their heath, can learn quickly and are looking for a new challenge, or perhaps for the next step in their career. The positions are open to non-smokers and ex-smokers. In this role you will be required to work across the whole of the hospital and so not based on any particular ward or department although it is expected that your service will be delivered on ward settings and within maternity unit.

Full training will be given, so no prior experience of delivering tobacco dependence is required, rather we are looking for the right people to fit the role. We are looking to appoint people who are particularly passionate about helping people to improve their heath and wellbeing.

We would like to have this role based at Scarborough and working from Bridlington too, supporting the East Coast patients as a priority.

Main duties of the job

  • You will deliver factual information with patients using reassurance, tact, empathy. The post holder will have to overcome barriers to understanding, for example where a patient / client has a physical impairment, a mental health condition or a learning disability
  • To provide one to one or small group brief interventions to support people with Tobacco Dependency & Nicotine Replacement Therapies.
  • You will need to foster good working relationships with tobacco community dependency service team and staff within other teams and partner agencies to strengthen service delivery
  • It is important that you communicate effectively with patients including by telephone, including agreement of most appropriate tobacco dependency support programme to meet their requirements
  • In addition, you will communicate effectively with a range of staff across disciplines, grades and sometimes from other organisations
  • It is sometimes necessary to communicate potentially sensitive information to service users and other health professionals
  • You will of course need to communicate effectively using written and oral skills and produce accurate written records of activities and work undertaken
  • The post holder must be able to demonstrate the English language proficiency level required for this post
  • A very important aspect of this role is to establish and maintain good relationships with patients, relatives and colleague

  • NVQ level 3 in Health Care (or equivalent)
  • Willing to undertake training in Smoking Cessation Level 2 or to successfully complete this within a 2 months of starting in role
