Job summary

Library Assistant - Mid and South Essex NHS Healthcare Libraries (Broomfield Hospital)

Mid and South Essex NHS Healthcare Libraries are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our dedicated team at Broomfield Hospital. With library services also based at Basildon and Southend Hospitals, we pride ourselves on delivering a high-quality, accessible service to staff across the Trust and partner organisations.

In this role, you will support the day-to-day delivery of core library services, ensuring users receive a responsive, efficient, and customer-focused experience. Working collaboratively with colleagues across all three sites, you will help maintain an equitable service and contribute to the continuous improvement of our provision.

We are looking for someone with a positive, proactive approach to customer care, strong organisational skills, and a passion for supporting learning and knowledge within a healthcare environment.

Main duties of the job

Deliver high-quality user experience and customer service within the library

Support library development and maintain accurate membership systems and data

Ensure compliance with relevant legislation (Copyright, GDPR, Health & Safety, Equality and Diversity)

Manage library resources, including issuing/returning stock, cataloguing, acquisitions, and stock audits

Maintain a clean, safe, and secure physical library environment

Perform administrative duties to support smooth day-to-day service operation

Provide administrative support to the Clinical Evidence Team, including outreach and training activities

Essential

  • Educated to A level standard or equivalent. Must include GCSEs (A*-C) Maths and English or equivalent IT skills

Desirable

  • A relevant NVQ - either library and information or customer service, or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable previous experience of providing customer care
  • Competent using Office 365 and MS Teams
  • Must be able to plan and organise workload in accordance with the needs of the service Ability to file alphabetically and numerically Ability to record information accurately Must be able to solve basic technical problems relating to IT and have the ability to assess, resolve and forward enquiries Must be able to follow processes to complete activities which require a systematic follow up
  • Must be able to solve basic technical problems relating to IT and have the ability to assess, resolve and forward enquiries
  • Ability to file alphabetically and numerically Ability to record information accurately

  • Experience of working in a library /information service environment
  • Should have ability to create promotional material (posters/leaflets etc.)
