Job summary
The clinical haematology service in Southend is an effective team of 4.6 WTE haematologists. The team is supported by One Trainee Specialty Registrar (from HEE East of England) and four speciality doctors (three ST3 level and one IMT1 level). There are 3.4 WTE Haematology CNS's. The clinical service in Southend is predominantly malignant haematology, seeing a typical population of Lymphoma (100 new cases per annum), myeloma (26 cases per annum) as examples. There is the expected general haematology workload given our local catchment population of 380,000. There is a busy anticoagulant service (managed by pharmacists and nurses); Acute Leukaemia is managed in liaison with Barts Health NHS Trust and shared care is delivered when feasible.
Your duties will be arranged with the Consultant to whom you are responsible, who has final medical responsibility for all patients under his/her care. Any clinical problems beyond your experience should be referred to a more senior member of your team.
To provide in-patient and out-patient care of individuals treated for haematological disorders, to gain experience and expertise in the management of such patients, to gain experience in the laboratory aspects of haematology including transfusion, coagulation and general laboratory haematology and to gain experience in audit in lab and clinical practice.

This post holder is responsible for any written communications concerning in-patients to the referring physician, the primary care physician or consulting physicians. This will include informing the above physicians and haematology secretaries within 24 hours of any new cancer diagnosis. This will include discharge summaries, letters of referral to other specialities, letters for insurance or financial purposes and medical reports. Discharge summaries are to be completed as soon as possible after patient discharge.
Staff going off duty has a responsibility to organise a formal hand-over to the corresponding incoming staff. This should involve a face-to-face meeting that may take 30 minutes or more, the meeting should be backed by written notes prepared by the outgoer or written at the time of hand-over by the incomer
Co-ordination of the haematology patients with other hospital personnel: this involves a multi-disciplinary approach to patient management.
A) Ward nurses: ensuring that the ward nurses are aware of the plan of management for any patient and liaising with them when arrangements are altered
B) Out-patient staff: ensuring that the support nurses are aware of the plan of management for any in-patients who will require day-care or out patient services and liaising with them when arrangements are altered
C) Laboratories: Ensuring that blood transfusion is aware of any special requirement for the patients
Outpatient Patient Duties:
The post holders will participate in certain supervised out-patient clinics, permitting clinical workload and post holder experience.
The post holder will be expected to attend a number of the outpatient clinics and to review any referrals.
The post holder will participate in preparations of MDT proforma and encouraged to attend the regional MDT meetings.
