Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine

The closing date is 30 November 2025

Job summary

We are seeking enthusiastic Locum Consultants in Emergency Medicine to join the existing ED team. The post is for a year fixed term, renewable for six months up to a maximum of two years from appointment. Contract renewal is not automatic and is based on strong evidence of progression towards CESR/CCT in EM routes.

Whilst the post has a strong emphasis on direct, consultant delivered emergency care, we are seeking applicants who will have the ability to make a major contribution to training and upskilling our junior medical staff, nursing staff and the wider professional team, to get involved and lead on QIP.

The department's many attributes include regional accreditation as a Trauma Unit, established as regional point of care ultrasound (POCUS) training centre with daily teaching run by accredited trainers. We also boast multi professional simulation sessions, dedicated teaching, and a unique CESR programme.

Main duties of the job

  • Reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and initial treatment of all emergencies as appropriate.
  • Referral of patients to other specialties, transfer of patients for admission to assessment units, to other hospitals within or outside the Trust, referral as outpatients or back to the community.
  • Provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients.
  • Be proactive in ensuring that patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring that Quality Indicators and System Metrics to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.
  • Work in conjunction with the nurse in charge and medical and surgical colleagues to ensure that there is effective and timely communication between the clinical team; timely intervention and safe care to maintain optimal patient flow.
