Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic audiologist to join our multidisciplinary Audiology Department at RSCH, Guildford.

We are a progressive audiology service which provides multidisciplinary services including a diagnostic and rehabilitation service for children/adults, Baha service, Vestibular diagnostics and rehabilitation service, Tinnitus and Hyperacusis service and the provision of private hearing aids.

Staff members benefit from taking part in a wide range of educational and professional development opportunities comprising monthly clinical training sessions, journal clubs, and case study sessions. Staff members are also supported to attend audiology conferences and external specialist training courses. In addition, there are plenty of in-house educational activities ranging from training programmes on audiology specialities (e.g., paediatric, tinnitus, vestibular diagnostics and rehabilitation, etc) to taking part in ongoing research projects.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to help develop the service, interact with Audiology students and be part of a friendly, supportive and highly professional team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of clinical audiology services, under supervision where required and in close working with the Audiology Team Lead, Adult Clinical Service Lead and Head of Department.

This will cover the maintenance of demonstrably high professional standards in respect of:

The scientific, technical, therapeutic, rehabilitation and clinical activity of the service

Patient care

The effective and efficient use of resources and the management of workload

The provision of professional advice consistent with the responsibilities and expertise of the department.

The post holder will:

  • Perform a range of technical activities including otoscopy, tympanometry and audiometry.

  • Provide a comprehensive hearing aid service to adult patients referred to the Audiology department including fitting and fine tuning of hearing aids.

  • Help with the day to day running and routine organisation of Adult Audiological services in the dedicated clinic as directed by a senior audiologist.

  • Be expected to participate in the department's rotational scheme at different locations, to maintain a wide experience in a variety of clinics

Update their own professional knowledge, keeping abreast of new technologies and Audiological techniques and be responsible for ensuring Continued Professional Development as required for state registration.

Carry out routine administrative duties, to ensure that departmental set objectives are effectively met, and achievements monitored within the management structure of the Audiology Services department.

Carry out routine clinical duties for adults related to ENT and Audiological Medicine, including otoscopy, tympanometry and audiometry.

Carry out all routine technical duties related to the fitting, repairing and testing of hearing aids.

Be responsible for the daily calibration of the Audiological equipment to ensure accurate results.

Carry out daily stock control audits at the outreach clinics to ensure transparent audit trails of stock use, and stock availability to enable the Head of Services to operate an overall stock control process.

Undertake specialised tests, and transpose the test results on to a computer, and make professional judgements as to what type and power of hearing aid should be prescribed and other appropriate management strategies.

Undertake regular clinical sessions in order to provide a quality technical service.

To provide advice to patients on all matters pertaining to hearing aids.

Counsel, advice and support as necessary by use of counselling and communication skills, to minimise the disability and handicap resulting from auditory impairment and tinnitus.

To advise on assistive listening devices and other services for the hearing impaired, and to refer to and liaise with a range of professional staff, and volunteer agencies to meet the patients special needs.

To provide ongoing assessment and maintenance of hearing aids for adult hearing impaired patients.

To have a knowledge of the operational working of the departmental patient I.T. management system.

To be responsible for writing in hospital and departmental records to enable a transparent record of the patients consultation in compliance with Trust policies.

To be able to work calmly and methodically whilst dealing with a busy and varied caseload, demonstrating good prioritisation and organisational skills.

To develop and maintain personal skills and knowledge within the Audiological field, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of procedural and professional developments.

To participate in the development of the Audiology Service.

To comply with departmental, local and national policies and procedures on Adult Audiology.

To comply at all times with the Royal Surrey County Hospital, and outreach hospitals Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents, using the Trusts Risk Incident Reporting System.
