(Fieldhead hospital in Wakefield).

Main duties of the job
This is an innovative role to give newly qualified or more experienced Physician Associates (PA) to work in either:
- Acute female psychiatry in-patient ward (Elmdale) based at The Dales, Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax
- Acute mixed gender psychiatry older peoples in-patient ward (Crofton) based at Unity Centre, Fieldhead hospital in Wakefield.
The PA will provide expert assistance to the multidisciplinary teams in the provision of a high quality service to patients. The post holders will work under the direction of a supervising Consultant and mentor, working collaboratively with other members of the clinical team within the organisations policies and clinical guidelines. The job will mainly involve inpatient work and liaiaosn with wider community teams. Successful appointees will perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge.

This post aims to offer high levels of both clinical and educational supervision to enable successful candidates to embed the skills and competencies. We will offer both clinical and educational supervision with a supervision framework similar to that offered to FYI Doctors.
PAs will be trained in a broad range of skills to undertake clinical care of patients as appropriate to the clinical environment and specialty. They will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients.
PAs will be clinically supervised by a designated consultant for each post. They will also oversee their professional development, supported by an annual appraisal and a professional portfolio. We aim to offer dedicated formal and informal clinical supervision a week together with half a day for professional development.
It is expected that the Physician Associate will become involved in all activities of the practice/department, including clinical governance, quality improvement projects, research and teaching.
The post holder will be involved with initial assessment, including taking medical histories; assessing and examining patients; initiating and interpreting investigations as appropriate; developing management plans in consultation with the patients; reviewing incoming clinical documentation; reviewing daily pathology test results.
The range of duties will be developed over the course in conjunction with the post holders capability and development.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Participate in all treatment and preventative healthcare services in the post as delegated and agreed by the supervising clinician.
- With clinical supervision as considered appropriate:
o Undertake patient consultations, assessments and examinations
o Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatment
o Request and interpret results of laboratory investigations when necessary
o Consult and refer as appropriate to other health professional/specialists in order to discuss or refer specific patients, plan and co-ordinate activities or exchange information in order to improve the quality of patient care
o Determine a list of differential diagnoses
o Recommend a management / treatment plan
o Perform diagnostic / therapeutic procedures, subject to training / experience and competency assessment.
- Educate patients in preventative health care
- Send and receive written information on behalf of the department regarding matters of insurance, housing and other issues relating to the physical and social welfare of patients.
- Act with empathy and consideration, involving the patient in decisions about their care.
- Ensure provision of good clinical care at all times using established clinical guidelines.
- Liaise with members of the practice / department multi-disciplinary team and allied services such as Community Nursing, dietician, community mental health team.
- Support the implementation of additional and enhanced services, including undertaking extended hours in accordance with the needs of the practice and its federation when working in primary care.
- Conduct telephone consultations (where approprirate) which may involve discussing the result and implications of laboratory investigations with patients as well as dealing appropriately with routine and emergency complaints.
- Support and participate fully in the clinicians day duty rota (where available)
- Maintain accurate and appropriate documentation for legal and administrative purposes.
