Assistant Psychologist - Older Adults

Job summary

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Band 4 Assistant Psychologist to join our Older Adults Acute Mental Health Inpatient Ward. This role is ideal for someone who is enthusiastic about working psychologically with older adults and keen to develop experience within a dynamic inpatient setting.

As an Assistant Psychologist, you will work closely with qualified Clinical Psychologists and the wider multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of high-quality, psychologically informed care. You will contribute to assessment, formulation, and intervention for older adults experiencing acute mental health difficulties, including functional and organic presentations.

This post offers excellent exposure to inpatient psychology, MDT working, and evidence-based practice, making it a valuable developmental role for those considering further training in clinical psychology or related professions.

Main duties of the job

Support psychological assessments, outcome measures, and care planning Assist in the delivery of individual and group-based psychological interventions under supervision Contribute to formulation-led MDT discussions Support service evaluation, audit, and quality improvement work Maintain accurate clinical records in line with Trust policies Promote psychologically informed and compassionate care on the ward

Qualifications

Essential

  • BA (Hons) or Bsc (Hons) in Psychology class 2:1 or above.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

Experience

Essential

  • Direct clinical experience within a mental health setting.
  • Experience within, or strong interest in, older adult needs.

Desirable

  • Direct experience supporting those with complex emotional needs
  • Clinical experience of working with/supporting, older adult groups presenting with mental health difficulties or with a dementia diagnosis
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of carrying out Psychometric tests, including administering and scoring, e.g., WAIS, RBANS.
  • Knowledge of serious mental health problems.

Desirable

  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems and neurodiverse differences.
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a mental health context.
  • An understanding of psychology applied to health care.

Skills

  • High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive.
  • Ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance

  • Experience conducting service evaluations / research & research methodology & using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience of working within an inpatient environment.
  • Experience co-facilitating or supporting group work delivery.
