Specialist Bariatric and weight management nurse

Job summary

To work within the adult specialist weight management and Bariatric Surgery service providing effective clinical interventions both in the surgical and non-surgical weight management programmes and advancing clinical practice in line with current evidence base. Providing highly specialised advice and support to patients which will include patient assessment, planning and implementing specialist care. In addition, the post holder is expected to provide clinical expertise within this area of care and to lead and develop education, training, research and audit relevant to the speciality.

The post holder will act as a bariatric surgery and weight management expert, collaborating with all members of the multi-disciplinary team. Close working with other specialist nurses whom this client group may also access in both primary and secondary care. Data collection for audit purposes particularly NBSR database, the CHFT Bariatric Database and other research related databases

The post holder will have a role in the development of the weight management service at CHFT

Main duties of the job

To conduct specialist assessment and treatment of patients in a variety of settings with other members of the MDT to ensure effective care pathways and transfer of care/discharge.

In conjunction with the Clinical Lead, ensure adequate staff cover within the team by agreeing annual leave, study leave, and report sickness absence to the Clinical Lead.

To assist the Clinical Lead in achieving the service objectives.

To actively participate in the departmental meetings

To assist the Clinical Lead in the monitoring of professional, clinical and departmental standards and assist implementation of change as appropriate.

To comply with the national, professional, Trust and service policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing and updating process as appropriate.

To participate in the staff recruitment process as appropriate.

Maintain confidentiality of all patient identifiable information in line with Trust policies relating to the Data Protection Act.

Initiate discussions with the Clinical Lead about any circumstances that could prevent the post holder or other staff fulfilling the requirements of the job description

To maintain adequate confidential records of all patients and ensure all relevant information is documented on the patients' electronic record.

To manage time effectively to meet service objectives

  • Relevant Degree/Diploma in Nursing
  • Registered with the NMC
  • Evidence of up-to-date best practice in obesity and weight management including surgery, self-directed and reflective practice

Desirable

  • Studied at Masters level or equivalent
  • Behavioural change training/motivational interviewing skills
  • Evidence of relevant accredited post graduate training
  • Non-Medical Prescribing or willing to work towards

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential

  • Recent advanced post graduate experience to assess and treat within the area of adult surgery and /or obesity in the NHS
  • Sound knowledge of current issues relating to obesity and interventions available
  • Knowledge of the key professional issues and NMC Guidelines relating to professional practice
  • Experience of supporting learning/mentoring in practice
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service in conjunction with other members of the team
