As part of BOB ICS (Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire West Integrated Care Systems) Berkshire West is excited to work in partnership with Berkshire Healthcare Trust on the pilot of a Mental Health Practitioner (MHP) working within primary care.
We are looking for qualified and experienced Mental Health Practitioner to join us in this exciting new opportunity, supporting GPs in a Reading based practice with on the day Mental Health support for children and young people.This pilot will provide an opportunity for better joint working across primary care and CAMHS and make it easier for CYPF to obtain the help they need.

Working pattern + Service operating hours
As a member of a small team, you will have a base within the University Medical Group GP surgery, but will be integrally connected to our Reading CAMHS Specialist Community Team (SCT) for peer support, line management and supervision. The main base for the pilot is Erlegh House at the Reading University, where staff members assigned to this base receive an addition High-Cost Area Supplement (HCAS) payments in their salary. Typical shifts are Monday - Friday, 9am - 5pm (subject to negotiation and flexible working).
Main duties of the job
- To provide a lead role in supporting the primary care network (PCN) in triaging on the day mental health concerns raised by CYPF, and providing specialist advice and support within the GP surgery
- To undertake mental health and 'strengths - based' assessments and review children and young people (CYP) presenting with mental health issues, consider a range of options regarding interventions, providing highly specialised advice concerning care and liaising with GPs and CAMHS teams
- To offer brief interventions as needed e.g. risk de-escalation, distress tolerance, psychoeducation, behavioural activation informed approaches (such as activity scheduling), worry management informed approaches including problem-solving,
- Working as a member of the primary care MDT and taking responsibility for the development and implementation of specialist mental health training to the PCN
- To provide a navigation role to help GPs make appropriate referrals to the relevant community and secondary care services - bridging the gap between primary care and community mental health support teams such as youth counselling, Mental Health Support Teams (MHST), and Primary Mental Health Team (PMHT), and CAMHS, as well as Children's Social Care and Early Help Services; working in partnership across the system.
- To act as the first point of contact for GPs, to offer mental health advice, support and signposting to appropriate agencies.
