Main duties of the job
The later life inpatient Unit comprises a 10 bedded ward for older adults with functional mental disorder and a 10 bedded unit for patients with organic brain disease.
The successful candidate will share RC responsibility for all the patients with their job share colleague, each having direct responsibility for 5 patients on each ward although covering for the other when they are not working and reciprocal cover for annual and other leave with other community senior medical staff.
Referrals are from later life community teams in North Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucester. The consultant will oversee the assessment and treatment of the patients on these wards and supervise medical staff in providing specific interventions for both medical and mental health.
They will work as members of the multidisciplinary team and liaise with colleagues in the community and other hospitals, working closely with family members and ensuring safe, effective and timely discharge planning.
They will oversee the application of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act and provide reports as required, liaising with other professionals and undertaking RC and AC roles.
They will be expected to participate in the Academic programme and in supervision and mentoring of resident doctors, and participate in annual appraisal and job planning and continuing professional development as well as undertaking other roles relating to medical leadership by agreement with the local Medical Lead.

- MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
