Job summary
North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest trusts in the country. Last year the Trust treated over 100,000 inpatients, over 35,000 outpatients, 90,000 emergency department patients and helped deliver over 6,000 babies. It employs more than 9,500 staff, has approximately 1,050 inpatient beds and income in excess of £540 million.
The Trust provides Medical, Surgical, Neonatal and Maternity Care for its local population of approximately a million people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The Trust also provides regional services in Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Pathology, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Renal Medicine and Transplant and Urology and is the Major Trauma Centre for the West Country.
The health service in Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire is being remodelled to concentrate on acute facilities and where appropriate to provide more care close to patient homes through a network community hospitals and facilities. The Trust recently moved the majority of its acute services to the Brunel Building, regarded as one of the best hospital facilities in Europe, on the Southmead Hospital Site. At Southmead Hospital, we also have our excellent maternity and women's health services, the Bristol Breast Care Centre and the Trust's Severn Pathology service.

Inpatient Services
The Respiratory Medicine bed base falls across both 28a and 27b. 28a, is a well-equipped unit with 6 HDU beds. 27b is a joint ward with the ID team.
Outpatient Services
There is an opportunity to attend outpatient clinics, both in general respiratory medicine and respiratory subspecialties including asthma and complex airways, complex infection/TB/bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, pleural medicine, and lung cancer.
About us
The Division of Medicine includes the Emergency Department and has c.426 beds in the new hospital. Specialty focused wards cover Cardiology, Coronary Care, Respiratory, Infectious Diseases and HIV, Care of the Elderly and Gastroenterology.
The Department of Medicine operates an active postgraduate programme with weekly journal clubs and grand rounds. All the professionals allied to the Department are involved in postgraduate meetings.
Information technology is well advanced in the Trust. Terminals on the wards, offices and clinics enable direct access to laboratory results, e-mail and Medline. NHSnet and Internet access is available.
The post holder is managerially accountable to the Clinical Directors of the Medicine Directorate, Dr Ella Chaudhuri and Dr Jarrod Richards.

Clinical experience
This position will provide an excellent grounding in respiratory which will put the successful candidate into an advantageous position when applying for any general or specialist medical training post. The candidate will gain considerable experience in managing respiratory conditions, closely supported by senior staff. Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff as appropriate.
Teaching
Teaching, examination and accreditation duties as requested by the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education and agreed with your clinical manager. Contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continual medical education activity locally.
Research
Although the appointee will not normally be expected to undertake research, opportunities do exist and encouragement is given to develop collaborative projects with other departments at North Bristol NHS Trust and the University of Bristol.
The post-holder will be required to submit or research development plans which have resource implications to the Clinical Director prior to implementation.
There are professionally staffed Medical Libraries, with a rapid service between these and the University Library situated in the centre of the City of Bristol. A computer literature search facility is available for which a charge is made and the library has links with other networks. The libraries are at the forefront of developments in electronic knowledge delivery.
Clinical Audit
The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme. The Trust has an audit department which supports and monitors such activity. There is an active Trust Clinical Audit
Annual Leave
