Job summary
This is a developmental post commencing at band 6 and after successful completion of a 12 month training programme, the candidate will become a band 7 breast nurse practitioner (please see attached job description for further information of role requirements).
The breast nurse practitioner is a vital role within the Breast Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) weekly meetings and working with other healthcare professionals involved in the patient treatment. The breast nurse practitioner will have specialist knowledge and understanding of a range of breast conditions and the management and treatment of these conditions. In addition, the nurse practitioner supports junior members of the team and service with training and learning opportunities.
Main duties of the job
The role of the breast nurse practitioner is to assess and review patients, under the supervision of the breast consultant team, who have been referred under an urgent suspected cancer referral to the service. This involves completing breast physical examinations, referring for diagnostic imaging and supporting patients during breaking bad news clinics. The nurse practitioner will also support genetic counselling patient consultations and refer to treatment services as appropriate. There may be further opportunities to be involved in breast reconstruction clinics and pre-operative patient clinics.

- Use advanced specialist theoretical and practical skills to assess the physical and psycho-social needs of patients providing both expert clinical advice to patients and carers and an accessible service, through the provision of consultant led inpatient, outpatient and specialist outreach services. To read and interpret results of investigations and act on these appropriately.
- Lead the strategic vision of specialist breast care nursing to include the proposal, development and implementation of policy and service development for own area and other areas beyond immediate remit.
- Demonstrate advanced level of clinical reasoning and judgement, and demonstrate ability to make decisions in the absence of evidence or when data are conflicting.
- Work autonomously examining and diagnosing breast complaints, making decisions about treatment, investigation, follow up and discharge, referring on to consultant colleagues when reaching the limit of own expertise.
- Responsible for the delivery of a detailed, accurate and potentially complex clinical handover and to produce detailed and accurate written information within the medical notes regarding all clinical assessments, investigations completed and requested and treatments administered. - Management of complex post operative breast wounds.
- Promote a learning environment within the clinical area of responsibility in which individuals take ownership for their professional development. Take an active role in undertaking staff training needs analysis as appropriate.
