Locum Consultant Microbiologist

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12-month fixed term 5 PA Consultant Medical Microbiologist post at UCLH due to current substantive staff undertaking a sabbatical due to start as soon as possible. The appointee will be joining a team of dynamic Consultants at UCLH.

There may be an opportunity to extend beyond this period dependant on funding.

This post is varied and will give the post-holder an opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of infection liaison activities and teaching.

The main activities are:o Intensive Care, providing laboratory liaison, expert microbiological and infection control advice and antimicrobial stewardship for patients in the intensive care unit, UCLH.o General Microbiology - leading the daily clinical bacteraemia / microbiology MDT on a rotational basis and participating in the Microbiology on-call service out of hours.o Providing clinical cover for Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, principally by delivering laboratory support.o Delivering Antimicrobial Stewardship through a regular medical / surgical ward round and attendance at the Trust's Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee.o Undergraduate teaching lead for UCL medical students placements in Infection: to include bedside teaching, case-based discussion sessions and infection services including assessment and evaluation of education. Attendance at Module management group to discuss quality of teaching.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is expected to comprise 5 PAs per week on average. This will include Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) time.

o Intensive Care:o Providing laboratory liaison, expert microbiological and infection control advice and antimicrobial stewardship for patients in the intensive care unit, UCLH, including attending twice weekly meetings to review results of metagenomics tests on blood and respiratory specimens for this patient population.o General Microbiology:o Leading the daily clinical bacteraemia / microbiology MDT on a rotational basis.o Participating in the Microbiology on-call service by providing advice on microbiological testing and clinical management out of hours - for frequency see below.o Specialist Microbiology:o Providing clinical cover for Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, principally by delivering laboratory support.o Antimicrobial Stewardship:o Antimicrobial stewardship round, medical / surgical ward on a rotational basis.o Microbiology representation at the Trust's Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee.o Teaching:o Undergraduate teaching lead for UCL medical students placements in Infection: to include bedside teaching, case-based discussion sessions and infection services including assessment and evaluation of education. Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • FRCPath or equivalent.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • MBBS or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Infectious Diseases
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
