Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join the Nurse -Led PICC placement service based on J80, in the Chemotherapy Day Unit in Bexley Wing in St Jamess Hospital in a part-time role 20 hours/week over 2 days.

The successful candidate should have an insight and/or experience in cannulation and central venous access insertion and care. This team places approx. 25 PICC lines per week for Oncology and Haematology patients.

The successful candidate would have a full training programme and competency package provided to become a proficient PICC placer although experience within this field would be an advantage.

Excellent communication and leadership skills are essential as the successful candidate would be expected to support communication and education with health professionals and patients throughout the oncology CSU. Knowledge/experience of audit would be an advantage as maintaining safe standards within the clinical room is a key part of the role.

The chemotherapy day case unit (J80) PICC line insertion service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is expanding, and there is an opportunity for someone 2 days a week, to become proficient and independent in the placing of PICC lines.

We are very keen to hear from registered nurses who want to work within this very close and supportive nurse-led team, who strive to give the best possible care they can to their patients and who are interested in central venous access devices.

The experience & clinical skills that you will get from working in this area are vast. You will work alongside an already proficient PICC line placer who will be involved in your training, as well as a dedicated acute lines team who will assist in guiding you through learning and the relevant clinical competencies that support the nurses role in this specialised area.

Job responsibilities

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with the 24-hour continuing responsibility for the effective and efficient management of the ward / department. They will contribute to the provision of professional, clinical, managerial leadership and supervision for the nursing team. The jobholder is responsible for helping to develop and maintain a ward or departments philosophy that has the patient at the centre of compassionate safe and quality care delivery. By assisting with managing the administrative and financial aspects of the ward, the jobholder will support the cost-effective use of resources.

As an experienced nurse the jobholder will assist in co-ordinating activities on the ward or department ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified nurses within the ward/dept. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The job holder will work closely with the Senior Sister providing day to day management and leadership of the department ensuring an efficient and effective service takes place, actively participating in the shaping and designing of the future Out Patient care. Placement of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters for Oncology and Haematology patients between Monday and Friday. Access and support the trust acute PICC line list as appropriate.

Lead and Co-ordinate the education of Health care professionals and patients regarding central line care and maintenance with support of from the Senior Chemotherapy Nurses.

Lead on audit and Service development to ensure a safe environment for placement and ensure a positive patient experience.

Act as a resource/provide advice/troubleshooting for the management of complications/issues with central venous access.

Ensure the appropriate use of resources and work towards the reduction of waste

Keeping up to date with novel developments in central venous access

Fulfils the requirements as directed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to maintain and revalidate registration

Supervise ward staff with regards clinical practice and patient experience to promote the delivery of excellent clinical standards

Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high quality compassionate care as an expert practitioner

Ensure that documentation standards are maintained in accordance with NMC and LTHT guidelines, whether written or computerised.

Promote and maintain positive working relationships between all staff, internal and external to the Trust, involved in the care of patients

Help to set, monitor and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including those standards defined in local and national guidance

Maintain a safe working environment
