Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 staff nurse within the Surgical
Assessment Unit (SAU) in Abdominal Medicine and Surgery.
SAU
is a fast paced, acute assessment area which provides care for acute admissions
within the General Surgery, Urology and Gastroenterology specialities. We
assess patients directly from the Emergency Department and those referred in by
their GP or Yorkshire Ambulance Service. This is an excellent area to develop
clinical skills, triage assessment skills and contributing towards coordinating
a busy, acute assessment area.
The nursing team assesses patients prior to clinician
review and assists in implementing a plan of care/treatment, pre-assessment
prior to being added to a rapid access theatre list and assists clinicians in
carrying out minor-ops procedures. The service operates Monday Friday at the
hours of 8am 6:30pm.
Main duties of the job
You will learn how to triage patients
effectively; providing first line treatments and care; responding quickly and
appropriately to deteriorating patients; and contributing towards providing
high quality patient care. The staff on SAU work closely with the medical team,
which includes our Emergency General Surgery Consultant team. You will also
work on the Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC) where patients are seen directly
by a consultant following a referral from the GP. Effective service delivery
requires staff to be flexible and work full rotating shift patterns. Candidates
should either have current NMC registration or awaiting NMC pin. If you have
the correct skills and qualifications for this post then please complete an
application form.
About us
SAU
is an assessment area which provides care to patients requiring acute
assessment within the general surgery, urology and gastroenterology
specialities. SAU has 15 beds, 6 assessment trolley spaces and a seating area
and provides care 24 hours 7 days a week. We assess patients from the Emergency
Department and patients are referred in by GPs and Yorkshire Ambulance Service
via a service called Primary Care Access Line. We then assess patients, provide
treatment and then admit or discharge based on results.
ASC
is an ambulatory area that provides same day care to Emergency General Surgery
patients. It is consultant led but has a team of junior doctors, advanced
clinical practitioners, nurses and clinical support workers. Patients are
referred from GP Primary Care Access Line or the Emergency Department after
discussion with an EGS consultant.
