Job summary

This is a fixed term contract role with a contract end date of 31 March 2025.

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive individual to join the Information Systems and Support Team to take on the key role of Application Support Analyst.

You will carry out a variety of IT system support and administration tasks, primarily leading and overseeing the end-to-end management and delivery of new and existing Awards schemes, via software configuration of the NIHR Academy Research Management and Information System (ARAMIS).

Providing leadership and line management for a small team of Change and Configuration Analysts, you will have responsibility for the full development lifecycle from requirements capture, to preparing rounds and online forms, managing system issues / change requests and supporting releases / updates. You will also work closely with suppliers, leading regular service delivery and review meetings to support these aspects of system management and help drive future improvements.

Main duties of the job

The role will also require support of other IT systems employed by NIHR, including (but not restrictive of) developing and maintaining IT related documentation and policies, as well as developing and providing staff training for IT systems.

You will work closely with the Assistant Director Information Systems and Support in meeting future NIHR system needs, as well as overseeing the performance, integrity and security of IT services in line with NIHRs business requirements and digital strategy, liaising closely with Programme, Finance, Communications and BI teams.

You will be expected to keep up to date with the latest trends and methods in IT to ensure the NIHR keeps pace and can exploit the latest technologies, and mentoring and training other staff members within the ISS Team.

You must be an excellent communicator with the ability to prioritise, schedule, and manage the delivery of a complex, wide ranging, time-critical and unpredictable workload. Experience of working in an Agile environment and knowledge of programming, particularly in JavaScript, would be highly desirable.

Relationship management

  • Participate in NIHR IT projects when required to ensure NIHR Academy operates according to DHSC information/data management requirements.
  • Communicate and manage change effectively to internal stakeholders in a timely manner, dealing with questions in a diplomatic and sensitive manner.
  • Engage, liaise and build effective relationships with suppliers.

Business continuity

  • Manage the application support of all IS services (eg Qlikview) to NIHR staff and external users.
  • Provide system administration, including access control, local configuration and training for all services eg. Qlikview.
  • Undertake technical capacity planning in order to carry out the systems administrator aspects of the role for Qlikview.
  • Support the Assistant Director Information Systems and Support on negotiations with external IT suppliers on behalf of NIHR Academy on IT specific issues ensuring local issues are effectively addressed and performance is managed within SLA; liaising with the suppliers of NIHRs research management and information system, on a daily basis. The post holder will act as the deputy (representative) as required, for the Assistant Director - Information Systems and Support in any discussions regarding operational IT service provision.
  • Provide structured training and documentation for staff to include one to one and group training sessions, based on needs analysis.
  • Manage release management activities including the release management plan. This will include the oversight of all system testing output by the supplier and the coordination of all user-acceptance testing.
  • Re-configuring systems requires detailed planning and management of the change plans of multiple awards. The job holder will work with the supplier to manage the environments, manage testing and the test plans.
  • Responsible for the management of the incident, change, risks and issues logs and act as the lead contact with the supplier on a day to day basis.
  • Support the Assistant Director Information Systems and Support in the on-going review of IT requirements and make recommendations regarding upgrading and new IT resources such as software for finance, systems performance and internal communications purposes.
