Job summary

The SWLSTG CAMHS Emergency Care Service (CECS) provide Therapeutic Assessment and crisis planning for young people under 18 presenting with a mental health crisis to A&E's and paediatric wards in South West London. In addition to crisis assessments the team are also able provide brief therapeutic interventions and support to young people and families during follow up appointments.

The CAMHS Crisis Clinician is also a key link to further support and will liaise closely with the young person, family and other professionals to ensure a smooth transition to the appropriate treatment/ support. The team utilise skills gained in specialist training courses including Solutions Focused Therapy, DBT skills, Family Work and Therapeutic Assessment.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an experienced CAMHS clinician to join the CAMHS Emergency Care Service for children and young people presenting across 3 Acute hospitals in the boroughs of Merton, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston and Wandsworth with self-harm and in mental health crisis. The team is well led by a Senior Clinical Nurse and CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist.

The post holder will undertake a range of therapeutic tasks which will include:

Assessment of children and young person's presenting with self-harm, suicidality and mental health crisis, at the A&E Departments or following admission to the paediatric wards.

Working with colleagues to provide training, education and support of A&E, Paediatric and Adult Psychiatric Liaison staff, through formal teaching and provision of active clinical leadership to the ward teams

Provide consultation and advice to ward teams with respect to management of complex cases

To actively participate in the service development.

The post holder will be assigned a main area however will also be expected to travel to the CAMHS bases in Wandsworth, Richmond, Kingston and St Georges, Kingston and West Middlesex hospitals.

Clinical

- To undertake psychosocial assessment of young people following acts of self-harm and/or when presenting with a psychiatric disorder. Assessments will take place on the

Paediatric wards and A&E Departments of St Georges, St Helier and Kingston Hospitals.

- To complete risk assessments and risk management planning for young people in mental health crisis.

- To liaise and consult with CAMHS colleagues to provide further specialist assessment if necessary.

- To offer follow up appointments following initial assessment to review risk management plans and assess further support required. To provide links and transition support to other services as indicated.

- To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options in consultation with teams across the Trust and wider agencies including social services, voluntary services, CAMHS teams, the Adolescent Assertive Outreach team, psychiatric inpatient wards, respectively.

- To provide advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals working in other agencies and contribute to multi-agency care planning.

- To provide clinical leadership to clinicians of the Paediatric wards, Adult Psych Liaison and A&E staff.

- To follow the assessment protocol and to complete the clinical record on the CAMHS Clinical Information System (IAPTUS) maintaining clinical records appropriately and in line with the Trust policy

- To participate in regular clinical supervision.

- To ensure high standards of verbal and written communication with all staff and clients that maximise user involvement in the delivery of care and treatment

- To comply with London Child Protection Procedures on the management of child protection issues and those of South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust.

- To act as a mentor/ practice educator to students on placement within the CAMHS Emergency Care Service and support the learning of students in other CAMHS teams.

- To maintain professional registration.

- To contribute to the education and training of A & E, paediatric and Adult Psych Liaison staff on specialist assessment and best practice care of children and young people with mental health difficulties.

- To develop and maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professionals, agencies and departments.

- To participate in staff development programmes.

- To participate in the development and auditing of service standards.

- To keep up to date with current developments, national guidelines and research based practise in CAMHS.

- To actively contribute to complex case reviews and multiagency meetings in the planning of care for children and young people.

- To be proactive in seeking the views of service users and stakeholders in helping to evaluate and review the work of the service.

Administration

- To keep up to date comprehensive clinical notes and prepare formal documents such as letters, referral and discharge summaries and reports.

- To maintain and record client contact statistics using CAMHS clinical systems.

- To ensure administrative tasks are completed within the time scales set down in the service standards.

- To attend team meetings, supervision support sessions and reviews as agreed.

- To contribute to the formulation and evaluation of policies and the development of ideas for changing policies as appropriate.

Training and Development

- To attend all mandatory and statutory training sessions as required by the Trust.

- To participate in continuing professional development, monitoring requirements and make recommendations for the most appropriate model of service delivery.
