Job responsibilities

Patient Care/Clinical Practice

• Competently manage and treat a range of patients in sexual health and HIV
• Demonstrate the ability to recognise situations that require escalation to the appropriate professional for help and
• Implement and evaluate individual care / treatment
• Undertake a range of agreed clinical skills once trained and deemed competent including:
  • Venepuncture and phlebotomy skills including HIV Point of Care Testing
  • Urinalysis
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Taking patient observations and measurements including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight as required
  • Staining and reading microscopy slides
  • Managing and processing specimens
  • Chaperoning and assisting clinicians with examination and procedures for male and female patients

• Communication

  • Effectively communicate information to other health care professionals, patients and families/ carers.
  • Demonstrate inter-personal skills that promote clarity, compassion, empathy, respect and trust.
  • Communicate with individuals, carers and other visitors to the trust in a courteous and helpful manner, whilst being mindful that there may be barriers to understanding.
  • Ensure that you communicate sensitive information in an understandable form to patients, relatives and other staff

• Professional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty and safeguarding concerns and processes, applying principles to every day practice and seeking advice from Registered Nurse/other registered healthcare professionals as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality in line with Trust policies, ensuring compliance with the processes of electronic record systems utilising protected access including ID, passwords and smartcards.
  • To promote a sensitive and caring approach to patients, visitors and colleagues.
  • Keep up to date with current developments in nursing and ensure evidence based practice is maintained.

• Continuing Professional Development/ Education and Learning

  • Maintain and develop own learning record of evidence, including booking and attending all statutory, mandatory, trust, and speciality specific
  • Contribute and attend the department/ward based preceptorship for nursing associates and support other staff or learners where
  • Maintain, develop and record your own continuing professional development, demonstrating continuous evaluation of personal clinical practice and identifying opportunities to meet own learning needs.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Nursing Associate
• Demonstrable literacy and numeracy skills

Desirable

• Evidence of comprehensive professional development in sexual health including relevant specialist courses/training
• Knowledge/skills within sexual health and HIV
• Sexual Health Course including STIF

Experience

Essential

• Demonstrable experience within an NHS clinical role role/setting and/or equivalent experience providing customer care
• Current GU experience including screening male and female patients
• Experience of telephone work and recall with patients
• Evidence of working with staff from different professional disciplines
• Experience of utilising evidence in practice

Desirable

• Autonomously managing asymptomatic patients to manage their care
• Managing young people in collaboration with Registered Nurse and any associated safeguarding issues
• Assessment of MSM patients including health promotion/advice (vaccinations/PEP/PrEP)
• Experience of delivering routine PrEP
• Clinical experience in HIV/GUM field including vaccinations .To have a basic knowledge of STI's and HIV.
• Evidence of practice development competent in cervical cytology

• Able to identify relevant clinical needs of patients within the specialty
• Demonstrates an understanding of current developments in the Trust, NHS and Government strategies
• Venepuncture, microscopy, cervical cytology
• Ability to identify violence and aggression within the clinic environment
