Job summary

We are looking for a registered Nursing Associate to work as part of Nursing team at John Hunter Clinic for sexual health and Kobler Outpatients HIV service. This involves assisting the Multi professional team in the delivery of a high standard of care to patients attending for Sexual, reproductive and HIV health care.The ideal candidate will already have knowledge and a passion for Sexual Health and sexually transmitted infections. The role will involve both the face-to-face interactions with patients along side the nursing team.

Other aspects include housekeeping and administration duties which involve overseeing the maintenance of a safe environment for both patients and staff.

As a Nursing Associate you will have a role in the mentoring and leadership of more junior members of the team.

Main duties of the job

  • The role of the Nursing Associate is to be responsible for delivering high quality, patient centred, compassionate care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse for patients attending for sexual, reproductive and HIV health care. With a focus on promoting health.
  • The role encompasses clinical duties including direct patient care and having the ability to work without direct supervision, at times delivering care independently in line with the individuals care plan.
  • To work flexibly within both Kobler/John Hunter Clinic.
  • Be an accountable professional, working within the parameters of the Nurse Associate role (as per NMC guidance), and your scope of competence, accessing clinical and care advice as needed.
  • Carry out specific clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, under the direction of a registered nurse or other registered healthcare professional, dependent on the setting.
  • Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS and the Trust PROUD values.
  • Other aspects include housekeeping and administration duties which involve overseeing the maintenance of a safe environment for both patients and staff.
  • Work in line with Trust policies, objectives, protocols and local guidelines, whilst also being aware of the importance of their role in supporting members of the team, and always adhering to the Trust values, and in accordance with NMC regulations.

  • Undertake a range of agreed clinical skills once trained and deemed competent including:
    • Venepuncture and phlebotomy skills including HIV Point of Care Testing
    • Urinalysis
    • Pregnancy testing
    • Taking patient observations and measurements including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight as required
    • Staining and reading microscopy slides
    • Managing and processing specimens
    • Chaperoning and assisting clinicians with examination and procedures for male and female patients
  • Communication

    • Effectively communicate information to other health care professionals, patients and families/ carers.
    • Demonstrate inter-personal skills that promote clarity, compassion, empathy, respect and trust.
    • Communicate with individuals, carers and other visitors to the trust in a courteous and helpful manner, whilst being mindful that there may be barriers to understanding.
    • Ensure that you communicate sensitive information in an understandable form to patients, relatives and other staff

    • To promote a sensitive and caring approach to patients, visitors and colleagues.

  • Continuing Professional Development/ Education and Learning

    • Maintain and develop own learning record of evidence, including booking and attending all statutory, mandatory, trust, and speciality specific
    • Contribute and attend the department/ward based preceptorship for nursing associates and support other staff or learners where
    • Maintain, develop and record your own continuing professional development, demonstrating continuous evaluation of personal clinical practice and identifying opportunities to meet own learning needs.
