Genomic Medicine Service Clinical Director

Job summary

This is a unique opportunity to join the Central & South Genomic Medicine Service (C&S GMS) as Clinical Director - a new senior leadership role within an evolving regional and national genomics landscape.

The post will commence on 1 April 2026, subject to the successful award of the new NHSE Genomics Contract, anticipated in January 2026.

The C&S GMS is a partnership between:

  • Birmingham Women's & Children's NHS Foundation Trust (lead provider)
  • Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust
  • University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

Together, these partner organisations form one of the most comprehensive and research-active genomic networks in the UK, serving a population of over 11 million people across 12 Integrated Care Boards, 42 NHS Trusts, and 1,152 GP practices.

The Clinical Director will provide strategic clinical leadership to ensure the C&S GMS delivers high-quality, safe, and innovative genomic medicine aligned to the NHS Genomics Strategy.

This post will commence on 1 April 2026, or sooner if mutually agreed subject to NHS England awarding the Genomics Contract to the Central & South GMS (expected January 2026).

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Director will:

  • Provide strategic clinical leadership and direction across the Central & South Genomic Medicine Service, shaping the delivery of high-quality, equitable, & sustainable genomic services across rare disease, cancer, pharmacogenomics, and population health.
  • Oversee the delivery of robust clinical governance, patient safety, & quality improvement frameworks, ensuring the highest standards.
  • Lead the embedding of genomics into mainstream medicine across all clinical specialties, supporting national ambitions for personalised & precision healthcare.
  • Lead the development and clinical integration of genomics within population health programmes, harnessing data & precision medicine approaches to improve prevention, early diagnosis, and outcomes across diverse communities
  • Work closely with the GMS Chief Operating Officer, partner Trusts, NHS England, Genomics England, & the GMS Partnership Board to deliver the clinical, operational, & strategic priorities of the new contract.
  • Foster collaboration between academic institutions, research organisations, & industry partners to translate genomic science into clinical benefit.
  • Champion the development of a skilled, multidisciplinary clinical workforce across the region, ensuring training, education, & clinical competence in line with the NHS Genomics Workforce Plan.
  • Promote equitable access to genomic testing & services, reducing health inequalities and ensuring consistent clinical pathways across the region.

  • A medical consultant with proven experience of leading, developing and managing a large-scale genomic service
  • Senior clinician or scientist, with a broad understanding of genomics with national leadership experience and credibility
  • National leadership experience with international recognition within their own specialist area of genomics
  • Knowledge of the genomics clinical and scientific landscape in the NHS and plans for the continued development of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service
  • A good understanding of the English healthcare system, and some understanding of international systems
