Job summary
Expression of interest (internal) is sought from existing substantive Paediatric anaesthetic consultants at BWC interested in doing regular sessions in Paediatric Intensive Care. You will join a team of Paediatric intensivist and substantive paediatric anaesthetist working in the paediatric critical care service to deliver high quality care to neonates, children and young people requiring critical care support. As an anaesthetist in a substantive role in BWC, you will be expected to continue the strong interdepartmental relationship between anaesthetic and paediatric critical care, focusing on governance and educational activities linking the two department and developing area of specialiation.
Main duties of the job
Eligibility
1. Substantive consultant in Pediatric Anaesthesia at Birmingham Children's Hospital, AND
2. Completion of a RCPCH PICM GRID training as an out of programme during Anaesthetic Training OR
3. Minimum of two years training in a RCPCH PICM Grid approved or equivalent training center (with RCPCH PICM ISAC review of evidence).
The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH) has 31 beds. The unit supports a wide range of medical and surgical specialities, including supra-regional services such as hepatology, liver transplantation, stem cell transplantation and burns critical care. The hospital is a paediatric Major Trauma Centre and the unit is commissioned by NHS England as a respiratory ECLS Centre. The department admits around 1400 patients per year. 85% of the admissions are ventilated during their stay. Our cardiac programme involves between 400-450 surgical cases a year, of which 330-350 are performed on bypass. The PICU has significant and expertise in safety, quality improvement, education & training as well as research & development, with many active clinical trials. Operationally unit is divided into A, B and C pods with cardiac patients cared for on B side. Appointee is expected to work in all three sides. This working pattern is under review.
